Pitching Remains Dominant as Arizona Sweeps Maverick Classic

ARLINGTON, Texas - Taylor McQuillin threw her second shutout of the season and Arizona defeated Samford 3-0 to close out the Maverick Classic on Sunday in Arlington, Texas.

McQuillin's shutout wrapped up a 3-0 trip to the Maverick Classic for the Cats (18-8), who concluded the nonconference portion of their season on a high note.

In victories over (RV) Texas, (RV) UT Arlington and Samford, pitchers McQuillin and Danielle O'Toole combined to allow just one earned run, posting a 0.35 ERA. The two combined to strike out 20 and walk four while allowing opponents to hit just .155.

McQuillin (7-3) outdueled Samford pitcher Mollie Hanson (7-6) in a game that featured just 10 combined hits. McQuillin allowed no runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Hanson allowed three runs on six hits with one strikeout.

McQuillin's four hits allowed all came with two out and Samford (11-11) only placed runners in scoring positions in two occasions, both with two out in an inning, making for a relatively stress-free complete game for the freshman.

Mo Mercado and Alexis Dotson homered in the contest. For Mercado it was her second home run in as many games and capped off a stretch of six consecutive at-bats with a hit for the shortstop. It was Dotson's first home run of the season.

Arizona scored first in the second inning when Alexis Dotson singled and scored from first on Lauren Young's RBI double to put UA on top 1-0.

Mo Mercado doubled the lead with a solo homer in the third to put Arizona up 2-0.

Dotson broke a stretch of nine straight batters retired with a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the seventh inning that gave Arizona a 3-0 lead.

Up Next: The Wildcats begin Pac-12 play in Tempe as UA meets Arizona State for a three-game series beginning Friday at Farrington Stadium.
