The Arizona women's tennis team fell to 9-7 on the season after losing to Colorado on Sunday, Mar. 13th and is now 0-4 in conference play.
“This loss really hurts,” said head coach Vicky Maes. “We were in a good position after doubles but then managed to give up too many deuce games when it really counted. You're simply not going to win matches like that. To be 0-4 in conference means you are not taking care of business and I am pretty disappointed in out performance this weekend.”
Sophmore Devin Chypyha and freshman Camila Wesbrooks defeated Colorado's Alex Aiello and Brigette Beck by a score of 6-2 to bring Arizona one win away from the doubles point. The 47th-ranked doubles team of Junior Lauren Marker and senior Shayne Austin took down Annabelle Andrinopolous and Jeannez Daniel on court one (6-2) to give Arizona the doubles point. Senior Inge Hendrikx and junior Samantha Czarniak's match on court two was halted while they had a 5-3 advantage.
Colorado tied the match when Wesbrooks fell to Aiello on court three (6-4, 6-3), but Czarniak quickly reinstated Arizona's lead with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kyra Wojcik on court five.
Arizona battled on courts one, four and two, but lost all three of the crucial singles matches. No. 27 Marker fell in three tough sets to Ormeno Ruiz (6-1, 1-6, 6-3) on court one not long before Chypyha lost her own three set affair to Andrinopoulos on court four. Austin also put up a good fight, but lost to Jeannez (7-6(4), 6-4), giving Colorado their fourth point on the match. Freshman Sophia Thomas bested Beck on court six by a score of 7-6(2), 6-4 to make the finalize the score at 4-3 Colorado.
The Wildcats will have a week to regroup before their next conference match which will be against Oregon in Eugene on Friday, Mar. 18 at 1:30 p.m. MST.
