TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona had two athletes competing in the decathlon today and two athletes competing in the heptathlon to kick off day one of the Jim Click Shootout.
“It was a very exciting day.” Head Coach Fred Harvey said. “Pau had some great performances today, a great shot put, a great long jump as well. He is on a great pace so far in the competition. We will get some recovery today and our athletes really set themselves up to have a great competition today and tomorrow.”
Pau Tonnesen, the reigning Pac-12 champion in the decathlon, led the way and currently stands in first place. He ran a wind-aided time of 11.22 seconds in the 100-meter dash that was the second best overall.
He then placed first in both the long jump and the shot put. His long jump mark was at 24 ft. - 5.75 in. (7.46m). He followed that up with the shot put at a mark of 47 ft. - 7.25 in. (14.51m). Pau also placed first in the high jump at 6 ft. - 6.5 in. (1.99m), and ended the day with a time of 50.72 seconds in the 400-meter. His total for the day was 4,073 points.
“It's just day one, so we have a lot to do tomorrow.” Tonnesen said. “There were some good events and some tough ones but overall it was a good day.”
Dion Shattuck-Baker did not finish the last event of the day. However, he ran a wind-aided time of 11.55 seconds in the 100-meter dash, followed by a mark of 21 ft. - 9 in. (6.63m) in the long jump.
Baker would go on to post a mark of 34 ft. 0.25 in. (10.37m) in the shot put. He would then post a personal record in the high jump at 6 ft. - 5.25 in. (1.96m).
Tiana Bonds is currently in eighth place in the heptathlon at 3,033 points. She ran the second best time in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.11 seconds, followed by a personal record in the high jump at 5 ft. - 4.75 in. (1.64m).
Bonds then posted a mark of 28 ft. - 1 in. (8.56m) in the shot put, followed by a wind-aided time of 25.39 seconds in the 200-meter.
“It was great to see Tiana Bond move back to the caliber type of athlete she was in high school, and at the beginning of last year. The hard thing about it is that she switched legs in the hurdles and is now starting to get a rhythm with that technique.” Coach Harvey said.
Alyssa Thompson is currently in seventh place at 3,071 points. She ran a 15.16 in the 100-meter hurdle, followed by a personal record in the high jump at 5 ft. - 4.75 in. (1.64m). She would then post a mark of 34 ft. - 7 in. (10.54m) in the shot put, followed by a wind-aided time of 25.39 seconds.
