TUCSON, Ariz. – Former Track Cat Pau Tonnesen has been selected by the Spanish Olympic Committee to compete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Tonnesen will be competing in the decathlon, which he excelled at during his time as a Wildcat.

Tonnesen currently has the 25th-highest score in the world after scoring 8,103 points at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. back on June 9 where he took fourth place and earned first-team All-America honors. His score of 8,103 points is also the highest score amongst all Spanish decathletes.

He set the Arizona school record back in June of 2015 at the NCAA Championships where he took second place with a score of 8,247, which still holds today. Tonnesen is a two-time Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Year and also took home the Pac-12 decathlon crown two times during his career.

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games are set to start on Friday, Aug. 5 with the decathlon beginning on Wednesday, Aug. 17. Tonnesen will be joined by current Wildcat Sage Watson who is competing in the 400-meter hurdles for Canada along with volunteer assistant coach Bernard Lagat who is competing in the 5K for the United States.
