Wildcats Win Two Straight to Start the Season

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona played two matches on Saturday, Jan. 28 and came away with its first two victories of the season. Arizona (2-0) moved past Northern Arizona (0-2) and Grand Canyon (1-1) by a score of 4-0 in each match.

"Overall the team did a very good job," said head coach Vicky Maes. "In singles, all of our girls were solid, composed and ready to go. There were a few glitches here and there, but that is to be expected on the first day of the season. In doubles, especially against NAU, I thought we were a little bit rusty. We let NAU be the aggressive team, which is not something you want to do when you're playing just one set. The girls made an incredible adjustment coming out in the second match and did a much better job in the doubles. We were more committed to the things we've done in practice and we weren't as tentative."

The match of the day took place early on in the form of a doubles contest. After Devin Chypyha and Camila Wesbrooks defeated NAU's Lewandowska/Granville 6-2, Paris Corley and Marie Van Aelst fell 6-1 to Lodewijks/Walker. This set up a decisive match on court one, in which Lauren Marker and Samantha Czarniak came from behind to beat Tomasetti/Szavay 6-4 and clinched the doubles point.

In singles, the Wildcats dominated. No. 18 Marker cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Hanneke Lodewijks. Wesbrooks knocked off Hailey Rochin 6-1, 7-5. Corley clinched Arizona's 4-0 victory by defeating Marta Lewandowska 6-4, 6-2. At the time the match was clinched, Chypyha led Blanka Szavay 6-4, 5-2, No. 89 Czarniak led Chiara Tomasetti 6-4, 3-2 and Van Aelst trailed Brandy Walker 5-7, 3-2.

The second match of the day followed a similar script. Corley/Van Aelst beat Rinaldi/Occhipinti 6-2 and Chypyha/Wesbrooks clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Petrzalkov/Buhr. Marker/Czarniak trailed Prudhomme/Baklini 5-3 when the point was clinched.

Corley defeated Celina Buhr 6-3, 6-1 to start the singles action on a high note. Marker eased her way to victory again, as she won 6-1, 6-2 over Tatum Prudhomme. The Wildcats clinched their second victory of the day when Corley beat Celina Buhr 6-3, 6-1. When the match was finished, Chypyha trailed Susan Baklini 6-4, 4-1. Czarniak led Alexandra Petrzalkov 6-1, 4-1. Wesbrooks trailed Emilia Occhipinti 7-5, 1-1.
