SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Arizona (6-1) fell in a tight match to UC Santa Barbara (2-4) to suffer its first loss of the season.
"Our girls put up a good fight today," said head coach
Vicky Maes. "We came up a little bit short but we played hard and did everything we could to win the match. Getting down 1-0 after doubles again really hurt us today, and we cannot allow ourselves to be in that situation every match. Regardless of the outcome, we learned a lot of valuable lessons this weekend, and we will be stronger going into the rest of the season."
Arizona got off to a slow start once again and lost the doubles point. UCSB took the first match when Yamada/Baker defeated
Paris Corley and
Marie Van Aelst 6-1. The Gauchos clinched the doubles point when Silveira/Gilbertson beat
Devin Chypyha and
Camila Wesbrooks 6-2. At the time the point was clinched,
Lauren Marker and
Samantha Czarniak trailed Dubavets/Stojic 4-3.
Â
UCSB lengthened its lead when Amanda Atanasson defeated Van Aelst 6-2, 6-3. Marker pulled the Wildcats closer with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Palina Dubavets. Wesbrooks tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Melissa Baker. The Gauchos regained their lead when Jaimee Gilbertson defeated Chypyha 0-6, 6-4, 6-3. UCSB sealed the match victory when Stefani Stojic moved past Corley 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. Czarniak beat Natalie Da Silveira 7-6, 6-4.
