TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona (8-1) remained undefeated at home this season on Saturday, Feb. 25 with wins over New Mexico (1-7) and Cincinnati (6-4). The Cats won 4-0 and 6-1, respectively.
"I was very pleased with how we played today," said head coach
Vicky Maes. "I think we made a great adjustment in the doubles with not having Sam in the lineup. Everybody stepped up. We were forced to change our doubles lineup, which we were going to do anyway. Camila and Devin played great in doubles. They've been struggling a little bit, so it was nice to see that the training this week has paid off. I think in singles everybody did a great job. I loved the fact that Maggie was in there, playing and battling at No. 6. She's been wanting to jump in that lineup, so this was her opportunity, and she did a great job with it. These were two good teams, and anything could have happened, especially when you have to pull your No. 2 player. Everybody has to be in a different situation, but I'm really happy with how we competed and how were able to dominate given the circumstances."
Arizona started the day off by taking the first two doubles matches against New Mexico.
Devin Chypyha and
Camila Wesbrooks moved past Burguiere/Chung, 6-0.
Lauren Marker and
Paris Corley followed shortly after with a 6-0 win over Copas/Dulskia. At the time the point was clinched,
Marie Van Aelst and
Maggie Cohen were tied with Olivier/Wong 3-3.
The Cats moved quickly in singles, as Chypyha notched a 6-2, 6-0 over Cassie Chung. Corley, playing from the No. 2 spot with
Samantha Czarniak injured, defeated Ruth Copas 6-1, 6-3. Wesbrooks clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Rachana Bhat. No. 27 Marker was tied 6-1, 1-6, 2-2 with Ludivine Burguiere when the match was called. Van Aelst led Diana Wong 6-3, 4-4.
Maggie Cohen was tied with Emily Olivier 6-2, 3-6, 1-1.
Arizona remained perfect in doubles against Cincinnati. Corley/Marker defeated Bellinger/Poggensee-Wei 6-1. Chypyha/Wesbrooks clinched the point with a 6-3 win over Morton/Philp. Cohen/Van Aelst led Hutchison/Miller 4-3 when the point was clinched.
The Wildcats proceeded to win five straight singles matches. Wesbrooks struck first with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Anna Philp. Marker defeated Lauren Bellinger 6-3, 6-1. Chypyha clinched Arizona's victory over Cincinnati with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Antonella Bramato. Corley won her second match of the day with a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) defeat of Kelly Poggensee-Wei. Cohen fought for a 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Harley Hutchison. Van Aelst clawed her way back from a 5-1 second set deficit to force a third set. However, she dropped the match to Caroline Morton 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8).
