Cats Remain Perfect with Wins over Sac State, UTEP

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona (5-0) remained undefeated on the season on Saturday, Feb. 4 with wins over Sacramento State (1-4) and UTEP (1-5). The Cats won 4-0 and 6-1, respectively.

"Two wins at home and being 5-0 is a great position to be in," said head coach Vicky Maes. "We definitely need doubles work. Even though we won both of the doubles points, we got a little bit lucky at times. I know we have it in us to play better. For example, No. 2 doubles has come a long ways since their first match. Something clicked between those two, which is fantastic, but we need to see that in No. 1 and No. 3. I believe they can do it, they're just a little bit more hesitant. We got away with it today, but that's not going to last. As far as singles go, we played a very controlled match against Sac State. Those girls were very good and athletic, but we didn't let it intimidate us. The girls were fired up to play and that was fantastic. Against UTEP, we were a little bit slower, which is to be expected when you've been on the courts for six or seven hours. But again, it was a good match, and watching Sam grind like that, I could watch that all day long. Lauren is not playing her best tennis but is still finding a way to win. I think Paris and Devin are doing a good job in their positions. Marie is a little bit up and down, but she obviously has the ability to do well. Mila was very consistent today, and I don't think we've seen her best tennis yet either. Overall, I'm very pleased. To be able to hit the road next week with a 5-0 record is exactly where we wanted to be. "

Arizona started the day off by taking the first two doubles matches against Sac State. Paris Corley and Marie Van Aelst moved past Chernyetsky/Mouzes 6-1. Devin Chypyha and Camila Wesbrooks followed suit with a 6-1 win over Gulnova/Wicker. With the doubles point already clinched, Samantha Czarniak and Lauren Marker dropped a 6-3 match to Loaiza Esquivias/Vyrlan.

The Wildcats made quick work of the singles action. Corley notched the first victory by a score of 6-2, 6-1 over Carolina Chernyetsky. Chpyha finished her match soon after, pulling off a 6-1, 6-2 win over Andie Mouzes. No. 18 Marker ended the match by defeating Ana Loaiza Esquivias 6-4, 6-3. At the time Arizona clinched the 4-0 victory, No. 89 Czarniak trailed 6-4, 2-3 to Karina Vyrlan. Van Aelst led 6-3, 3-3 over Sofia Wicker. Wesbrooks led Sofia Gulnova 6-3, 5-2

The Wildcats looked to move to 5-0 against UTEP in the second match. Corley/Van Aelst notched their second win of the day, 6-2, over Santos/Wagenvoort. Czarniak/Marker were defeated by Kulicke/Pietersz 6-2. That meant the doubles point would be decided on court three, and Chypyha/Wesbrooks delivered a 6-4 victory over Bennett/Visscher to give Arizona a 1-0 lead.

Chypyha got the Cats on the board in the singles draw with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Duda Santos. Wesbrooks defeated Maria Paula Medina, 6-2, 6-0. Corley clinched Arizona's fifth consecutive match win by knocking out Lois Wagenvoort 6-0, 6-3. The teams decided to finish out match play even though Arizona had already scored four points. Marker continued her unbeaten streak with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Vivienne Kulicke. Czarniak came back from a first set loss to beat Milou Pietersz 4-6, 6-0, 1-0(10-8). Similarly, Van Aelst also had to fight from behind, but fell just short of forcing a third set. She lost 6-1, 7-6(9-7) to Daphne Visscher.
