TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona (9-3) earned its first conference victory of the season with a 4-0 win over Colorado (8-4) on Friday, Mar. 10 at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.
"I felt that we played a really solid match today," said head coach
Vicky Maes. "We didn't play our best doubles, but we did what we needed to do in key points in order to win the doubles point. That was obviously great momentum going into the singles. In singles we were very fired up, and we took care of business quickly on a lot of courts. Having Sam (Czarniak) back in our lineup gives us a little bit of a different identity. It's a bit more natural. We did all we could without her, but it's much better when we have her. She's not only a force on the court, but her energy and cheering, and seeing her battle like that helps everybody. It made a difference today. It made us comfortable and reduced the pressure in singles that we've been feeling the last few weeks."
Arizona battled through a hot afternoon to earn the doubles point.
Devin Chypyha and
Camila Wesbrooks defeated Oleynik/Andrinopoulos 6-1.
Marie Van Aelst and
Maggie Cohen dropped a 6-4 match to Ormeno Ruiz/Wojcik. In the deciding match,
Lauren Marker and
Paris Corley defeated Hule/Ronaldson 6-4 to clinch the point.
No. 31 Marker moved to 11-0 in dual match action with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Nuria Ruiz Ormeno. Marker is now sitting at 98 career singles victories. Corley put the Wildcats on the brink of victory when she defeated Annabelle Andrinopoulos 6-2, 6-1. Van Aelst clinched the 4-0 win for Arizona with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Brigitte Beck. At the time the match was called,
Samantha Czarniak was tied with Louise Ronaldson 5-5. Chypyha led 6-4, 5-2 over Chole Hule. Wesbrooks had a 6-3, 4-1 lead over Kyra Wojcik.
