Arizona Loses 6-1 to No. 12 Cal

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona (9-5) lost its first road conference match of the season to California on Friday, Mar. 17 in Berkeley.

"We knew we were going to face a tough team today," said head coach Vicky Maes. "It was our goal to put up a good fight, but we got overpowered. Kudos to Cal for coming out and keeping constant pressure on us. While we had some chances here and there, Cal never let up on the big points. A true highlight, though, was Paris' win in singles. While she didn't play great tennis, she battled hard when it counted most and was able to beat one of the best players in the nation. I hope that, for her, this can serve as motivation to keep working hard and make those changes to her game that will turn her into a top player too."

No. 6/12 Cal showed it deserves its impressive national ranking by quickly clinching the doubles point. Hauger/Smith defeated Camila Wesbrooks/Marie Van Aelst 6-0. Lin/Nelson beat Maggie Cohen/Sophia Thomas 6-1 to put Cal up 1-0. At the time the point was clinched, Lauren Marker/Paris Corley trailed No. 65 Jansen/Starr 5-2.

Maya Jansen claimed Cal's first singles victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cohen. Wesbrooks dropped a 6-4, 6-1 match to Denise Starr. No. 96 Olivia Hauger sealed her team's victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Van Aelst. The Bears tacked on two more wins, as Maria Smith beat Thomas 6-4, 6-1, while No. 31 Marker dropped her first dual match of the season to No. 9 Karla Popovic 6-2, 6-3. Corley ended the match on a positive note, as she fought for a 7-5, 0-6, 1-0(12) win over No. 45 Maegan Manasse. With the loss, Arizona fell to 1-2 in conference play.
