TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona (9-6) is taking a brief pause from conference play with a home match against Rice (9-4) on Friday, Mar. 24 at 11:30 a.m. MST.
"Rice is a very strong team," said head coach
Vicky Maes. "We will have to compete at a high level on all courts to get the win. Our momentum has been halted somewhat with the amount of injuries we are currently dealing with, but our resolve is strong and some of our girls are able to gain much needed experience. We are taking it day by day, but we remain positive and we keep working hard."
Previously
Arizona had its first road conference matches of the season last week against some stiff competition, as both teams they faced were ranked in the top 12. The Cats dropped 6-1 decisions to both No. 4 Stanford and No. 12 Cal. Despite struggling as a team, No. 29
Lauren Marker and No. 119
Paris Corley each had huge individual wins. Corley battled two ranked opponents, coming up just short against No. 36 Caroline Doyle of Stanford, while defeating No. 45 Maegan Manasse of Cal. The strong weekend performance moved the freshman into the rankings for the first time in her career. Meanwhile, Marker won her 100th-career singles match against No. 69 Taylor Davidson of Stanford. She joins head coach
Vicky Maes as the only Wildcats in the last 20 years with 100 or more victories. She also jumped from 31 to 29 in the rankings.
The Opposition
The Owls, who are currently unranked but have been listed as high as No. 23 earlier this season and No. 38 last week, are coming off a 7-0 victory over Memphis. They are led by a pair of ranked players in No. 98 Lindsey Hodge and No. 101 Katherine Ip.
