Cats Drop Sunday Series Finale at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Arizona Wildcats dropped the final game of a three-game series at Oregon State on Sunday, falling to the Beavers 11-7 in the finale.

After dropping a pair of one-run games on Friday and Sunday, the Beavers finished off the sweep in cold and rainy conditions at Goss Stadium in front of 2,981 fans. The Wildcats dropped to 16-7 on the season and 2-4 in Pac-12 play after playing their first six conference games on the road.

Arizona now returns home for a four-game homestand, which opens Wednesday against Grand Canyon. The Wildcats will then host USC for a three-game series starting Friday for their first home conference series of the season.

The first two games of the series were back and forth affairs, but on Sunday, the Beavers led from the first inning. Oregon State scored three runs in the first off starter Rio Gomez. Gomez then settled down and retired six straight over the second and third innings.

But in the fourth, still leading 3-0, Oregon State got its bats going again. A two-out triple from Elliott Cary made it 5-0 and knocked Gomez out of the game after 3 2/3 innings. Landon Faulkner took over and got the final batter of the inning on one pitch.

The Cats then rallied for three runs in the fifth to cut it to 5-3. With the bases loaded and two outs, Alfonso Rivas singled up the middle to score Cal Stevenson and Kyle Lewis to make it 5-2. Jared Oliva then scored on a passed ball to make it 5-3 and knock Oregon State starter Jake Thompson out of the game.

But two runs was as close as Arizona would get the rest of the game. Oregon State added one in the fifth, three in the sixth and two more in the seventh off Faulkner and fellow relievers Ryan Gowens and Seve Romo.

The Cats plated four more in the eighth to make it interesting. The first run came on a single from Shane Martinez and then Stevenson added a sacrifice fly to make it 11-5. Two batters later, Rivas singled up the middle to score two more and make it 11-7.

Rivas finished 3 for 5 with four RBI in the loss, upping his season average back over .400 at .403. Matijevic was 2 for 4 with a run scored and his team-leading 14th double of the season. Stevenson had a hit, a walk, an RBI and a run scored for the Wildcats.

Wednesday's game against Grand Canyon at Hi Corbett Field is set for 6 p.m.
