TUCSON, Ariz. – The student-athletes for March have been announced as Soccer's Zoe Barrie, Swim and Dive's Blair Bish, Golf's Haley Moore, and Track and Field's Aaron Castle. These students have been honored because of their commitment to earning their respective degree, their ability to maximize their academic potential, and their dedication to academic improvement and growth.
These students have been chosen by members of the C.A.T.S Academics staff.
Zoe Barrie is a freshman from San Mateo, California. The defender is coming off of a successful first season as a Wildcat and a great high school career at Aragon High School, where she was two-year letter athlete in both soccer and cross country. Her club team, DeAnza Force, was also the 2013 ECNL National Champions. Barrie is currently a Pre-Business major through the Eller College of Management, hoping to pursue a career in sports broadcasting. Outside of soccer and the classroom, she recently joined Delta Sigma Pi, a business fraternity. Barrie's C.A.T.S Academics Advisor,
LeAnne Shoemaker speaks highly of her saying "As a first semester freshman, Zoe has a stellar semester and is continuing down that same path. Zoe is a great example to everyone around her and is going to do great things as a student-athlete!".
Blair Bish, a sophomore from Little Rock, Arkansas, currently holds the fastest time on the team for the 100 and the second fastest time for the 200 breaststroke event. At the NCAA meet, he took 1st place in the B final of the 100 breaststroke, as well as finishing 3rd at the PAC-12 Championships in the same event. Bish had an impressive high school career at Central HS, where he holds records in breaststroke, freestyle and IM. He was recently accepted in the Film and Television program and holds a minor in Sports Management.
Samantha Amato, his C.A.T.S. Academics counselor, calls Bish an academic comeback kid, saying "He has come a complete 180 degrees in terms of focus, organization, and communication and it's really exciting to see his maturity and academic success."
Haley Moore is finishing up a breakthrough sophomore season, earning three top ten finishes in seven events. The Escondido, Calif. native tied for second at NCAA Regionals last year as a freshman, posting 227 (+11), and finished ninth at the Pac-12 Championships, posting 211 (-5). Moore came out of high school ranked fifth in the nation for her recruiting class and the 2014 CIF Player of the Year.
Jennifer Mewes, her C.A.T.S Academics Advisor, praises Moore on her academic year saying " Haley graduated early to start at the U of A in Spring 2016. She is a great student and works very hard both in the classroom and the golf course." Moore is working towards a General Studies: Sports and Society major.
Aaron Castle, a redshirt senior from Newport, Wash., is going into his last season as an extremely decorated thrower, with awards such as 2016 NCAA All-American second-team (Shot Put), and 2015 All Pac-12 (Shot Put). Most recently, Castle took first-team All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Beyond athletic accolades, he is a three time Pac-12 All- Academic First team member. Castle will be graduating this spring with a degree in Biochemistry. Shoemaker, his C.A.T.S Academics advisor, calls Castle "a great example to everyone around him on and off of the track. Castle is one of the elite shot putters in the country, most recently taking home honors at NCAA Championships. Not only has he accomplished an immense amount on the track, but in 2014 and 2016, Aaron was named a USTFCCCA Academic All-American."
