DENTON, Texas - Arizona (8-2) lost its second match of the season to North Texas (5-7) on Friday in Denton, Texas by a score of 5-2.
"It would be an understatement to say that today wasn't a great day for our team," said head coach
Vicky Maes. "We played poorly to start the match in doubles and never quite recovered in singles play. The conditions were tough, but we should have been able to handle ourselves better. We were tentative and let UNT gain too much momentum. Moving forward, we hope to learn from this experience and do a better job against SMU tomorrow."
Arizona, fighting through rainy conditions, started off slowly and lost the doubles point. UNT took the first match, as Babic/Liang defeated
Maggie Cohen and
Marie Van Aelst 6-1. The Mean Green clinched the doubles point when Kononova/Kutubidze beat
Lauren Marker and
Paris Corley 6-1. At the time the point was clinched,
Camila Wesbrooks and
Devin Chypyha led Heczey/Thoma 4-3.
UNT took a 2-0 lead when Tamuna Kutubidze defeated Corley 6-3, 6-3. No. 27 Marker remained undefeated in dual match singles action with a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 74 Maria Kononova. Chypyha evened the score at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alexis Thoma. UNT closed with three straight victories to clinch the match. Van Aelst fell to Alexandra Heczey 6-4, 6-4. Wesbrooks lost to Minying Liang in a three set battle 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Cohen dropped a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 match to Haruka Sasaki.
