Cats Suffer First Loss of Season

FRISCO, Texas – The Arizona Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon in their final game of the Frisco Classic, falling to Nebraska 1-0 at Dr. Pepper Ballpark.

The difference in the game was an unearned run the Huskers plated in the first inning, which they made stand up for the rest of the game. Nebraska leadoff hitter Mojo Hagge singled to left and moved to third on an errant pickoff throw from starter Rio Gomez. The next batter, Luis Alvarado, singled to right to score Hagge for what would be the only run of the game.

Gomez was brilliant after the back-to-back singles to open the game. The junior left-hander ended up going seven innings, allowing seven hits, the unearned run, walking one and striking out five. He suffered his first career loss, dropping to 7-1 for his career.

He never allowed a runner to reach past second after the first, and only run reached second safely over his final six innings. Gomez is now 2-1 in three starts this season with an impressive 1.56 ERA. He has struck out 16 in 17 1/3 innings, and has walked just two.

His offense couldn't get him any support and was blanked for the first time this season and first time since May 20 of last season against Oregon.

The Cats outhit Nebraska eight to seven in the game, but went 0-10 with runners in scoring position, while Nebraska went 1-2. The Cats had a runner reach second base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but couldn't bring him home to plate the tying run.

Mitchell Morimoto, JJ Matijevic and Kyle Lewis all had two-hit games in the loss. Matijevic set up one of Arizona's best chances to score with a two-out double in the eighth. The next batter, Nick Quintana, scorched a ball, but it was snagged by shortstop Angelo Altavilla for the final out of the inning.

Alfonso Rivas then got into scoring position into the ninth for pinch-hitter Casey Bowman. Bowman had a lengthy at-bat, fouling multiple pitches off, but grounded out to end the game.

The Cats will stay on the road and look to rebound Tuesday at Texas Tech. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m MST.
