Wildcats Battle No. 38 Oregon, Come Up Short 4-3

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona (10-8) dropped a back-and-forth duel to No. 38 Oregon (11-7) on Saturday, Apr. 1 at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

"I'm really pleased with our effort today," said head coach Vicky Maes. "After yesterday, I think we needed to turn it around a little bit. The energy level was much better. We made some adjustments in doubles that allowed us to win the doubles point, and we had the momentum going. Lauren battled very hard, and Paris is playing great tennis. Camila played a terrific match, finding her way back into it after a first set in which she lost pretty hard. At the bottom of the lineup, they did the best they could. They were battling and stayed in the games. Oregon's a good team, and we're not entirely ourselves right now. I'm just really pleased with how the girls fought, and at the end of the day that's all you can ask for. We put ourselves in a situation to maybe get a win. Oregon played tough for the big points, so there's nothing bad I can say about my team. I'm very proud of them. If they can take that kind of resolve into the coming weekends, we can do very well."

"It's really tough to lose any match but today we fought hard as a team and really left everything on the court," said Paris Corley. "Lauren and I played really solid doubles and took control from the beginning, and it's always a great feeling to finish a doubles match like that and have that momentum continue in singles. I started off really strong in my singles. I started a bit slower in the second set, but I was able to find my rhythm and close out the match."

The Wildcats got off to an ideal start by taking the doubles point. Oregon struck first, as Kluiving/Tobita defeated Maggie Cohen and Marie Van Aelst 6-1. Lauren Marker and Corley came right back to beat Sangwan/Kahfiani 6-2. On court No. 3, Camila Wesbrooks and Sophia Thomas clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Rose/Clark.

The singles flight was filled with intense battles. No. 119 Corley won the first match over Alyssa Tobita 6-0, 6-4. Marlou Kluiving put the Ducks on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Thomas. Daniela Nasser tied the match at 2-2 by beating Cohen 6-1, 6-4. Oregon took the lead for the first time when Julia Eshet won a 6-3, 6-3 match over Van Aelst. No. 29 Marker stayed hot with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 win over Shweta Sangwan. That left the match to be decided on court No. 3, where Wesbrooks battled back from down 5-3, then 6-5, to force a tiebreaker against Nia Rose. Rose was able to come out on top by a score of 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (1), sealing a 4-3 victory for Oregon.
