Arizona Battles but Falls 4-1 to UCLA

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona (11-10, 2-6 Pac-12) went up against No. 22 UCLA (13-5, 7-1 Pac-12), and dropped a 4-1 match.

"This match was a lot closer than the end result shows," said head coach Vicky Maes. "We had our chances. UCLA is a winning team. They come in with an attitude that they're going to win, and that's something that we have to get used to sending back. In the doubles we came close. At No. 2, we did a really good job of coming back. It was just a little too late, and that makes a difference. In all the singles, you look up and we're very close in all of the first sets. What I'm really pleased about is that we kept fighting in the second sets. We've played big teams where we were close in the first, but didn't win the set, and then we check out. I'm really happy that we played hard beginning to end. I just really hope the girls see that, and take it into tomorrow. If we can start converting some of those games, then who knows what could happen."

Arizona came close to securing the double point, but weren't quite able to pull it off. Shibahara/Wiley defeatd Samantha Czarniak and Marie Van Aelst 6-2. Lauren Marker and Paris Corley responded by knocking off No. 24 Hart/Fleming 6-4. On court No. 2, Sophia Thomas and Camila Wesbrooks stormed back from down 4-0, and later 5-2, to force a tiebreaker. Andrews/Miller were able to hold off the Cats, winning 7-6 (7-4).

In singles, the competition was very close. Five of the six sets either went to a third set or went to seven games in one of the sets. Terri Fleming defeated Corley 6-1, 6-3. In a battle of highly ranked players, No. 3 Ena Shibahara held off No. 31 Marker 7-5, 6-4. Maggie Cohen put Arizona on the board with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win over Kristin Wiley. The Bruins clinched a 4-1 victory when Gabby Andrews beat Thomas 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Wesbrooks led No. 107 Jada Hart 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 2-1 before the match was called. Van Aelst was tied with Alaina Miller 7-5, 4-6, 2-2.
