Cats Hang 18 Runs on Ducks to Earn Series Win

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats again flexed their offensive muscles in the series finale against Oregon, pounding out 23 hits and beating the Ducks 18-4 in front of 3,372 fans at Hi Corbett Field to claim the series win.

Arizona (26-9, 9-6 Pac-12) scored four runs in the first and four more in the second to jump out in front of the Ducks and cruise to a win. The Wildcats had seven players register multiple-hit games, led by sophomore designated hitter Alfonso Rivas, who went 5 for 5 with two RBI and four runs scored. JJ Matijevic went 4 for 5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Rivas upped his season average to .415, while Matijevic saw his rise to .418, which leads the Pac-12 Conference.

But it was far more than just Rivas and Matijevic contributing Saturday in the series finale. In the first inning, Cal Stevenson, Rivas and Jared Oliva all singled to load the bases with nobody out in the first inning for the second straight day. Matijevic and Mitchell Morimoto followed with RBI singles to get the Wildcats on the board. After an out, Cesar Salazar singled to center to plate Oliva and Matijevic and give starting pitcher Rio Gomez an early 4-0 lead.

After Gomez allowed one run in the second, his offense got him four more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Rivas started the rally with a one-out double and moved to third on an error. Oliva drove him home with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1. With nobody on and two outs, the Cats started another rally. Matijevic singled and stole second. He then scored on an RBI double from Morimoto.

Morimoto then came home on a two-run home run from Nick Quintana. The freshman from Las Vegas has now reached base safely in 24 straight games, which is the longest streak by an Arizona freshman since Jason Donald reached base safely in 30 straight in 2004.

Leading 8-1, Gomez kept the Ducks off the scoreboard in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Meanwhile, the Cats added one in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth. In the fourth, Matijevic led off the inning with his 21st double of the season and scored on an RBI single from Quintana. In the fifth, Rivas and Oliva had back-to-back two-out walks, putting two on for Matijevic, who singled up the middle to score Rivas.

In the sixth, Cameron Cannon and Louid Boyd walked with one out and Stevenson brought home Cannon with a single through the right side. Rivas followed with a single through the left side to score Boyd and make it 12-1.

Oregon finally got to Gomez in the seventh, scoring three runs and knocking him out with two outs in the inning. The junior left-hander went 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, while striking out three and walking just one. He improved to 4-3 on the season.

Leading 12-4, the Cats added six in the seventh inning to officially put the game out of reach. Morimoto singled to start the inning and moved to third on a one-out single from Salazar. Cannon followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Morimoto. After a walk to Stevenson and a fly out, Rivas singled to right to score Salazar. Cannon later scored on a passed ball and Oliva doubled to left to plate two more runs. Pinch-hitter Cory Voss capped the scoring with a single through the left side to score Oliva.

Tylor Megill, who entered for Gomez in the seventh, pitched a scoreless eighth, and Robby Medel came onto pitch a 1-2-3 ninth inning to lock down the win.

Oliva finished 2 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Morimoto was 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Quintana hit his fifth home run of the season and finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI. Salazar finished 3 for 5 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Cats are now 19-1 at home this season and 42-8 at Hi Corbett under Coach Jay Johnson in his two seasons. The Cats will have a chance to build on that starting Thursday when they host Utah for a three-game series.
