Cats Have 6-Game Winning Streak Stopped

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Cal Golden Bears scored in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to break a tie and top the Arizona Wildcats 9-6 Saturday night in front of a season-high 5,217 fans at Hi Corbett Field. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Cats and a seven-game conference winning streak.

The loss dropped Arizona to 37-18 on the season and 16-13 in Pac-12 play. Cal improved to 24-29 and 14-15 in the league. The crowd of 5,217 topped the previous season high of 5,208 set April 14 versus Oregon.

Cal jumped on starter Cameron Ming in the first inning, scoring five runs off the junior left-hander, who entered the game having tossed back-to-back complete games in conference play. But the first five men reached off Ming, including Denis Karas, who hit a three-run home run with one run already in in the first.

Ming got the final three batters of the first to limit the damage and then held Cal off the scoreboard until the sixth inning. In the mean time, Arizona's offense came back to get the Wildcats back in the game after Cal's big first inning.

The Cats scored two runs in the first inning. Jared Oliva singled with two men on and one out to plate JJ Matijevic, who walked earlier in the inning with one out. The Cats then loaded the bases with one out after Ryan Haug walked. Kyle Lewis plated Alfonso Rivas one batter later with a sacrifice fly to center, but a ground out ended the inning and capped Arizona's inning at two runs.

Ming pitched a perfect second inning and Arizona's offense went back to work. Louis Boyd singled to start the inning and moved to third on a double from Cal Stevenson. Cesar Salazar brought Boyd home with an RBI groundout and Matijevic hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Stevenson and make it 5-4.

Two innings later in the fourth, Arizona pulled even to tie the game at five apiece. Boyd singled to start the inning and moved to second when Stevenson walked. Salazar then hit a fielder's choice, but an errant throw from the shortstop allowed Boyd to score all the way from second and tie the game.

That remained the score until the Bears plated a run to go ahead for good. With two outs and a runner on second, third-place hitter Andrew Vaughn singled off reliever Tylor Megill to plate Ripken Reyes and make it 6-5. The run was charged to Ming, who hit Reyes to start the inning.

Cal added one more in the seventh and two more in the eighth to take a 9-5 lead into the ninth inning. The Cats tried to rally in the ninth. Salazar walked and Matijevic hit his 29th double of the season to put runners on second and third with no outs. A ground out from Rivas scored Salazar to make it 9-6, but Arizona wouldn't get any closer.

The Cats will close out the regular season Sunday against the Bears and go for the series win. First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m., with Senior Day ceremonies scheduled for 1 p.m. Sophomore right-hander Cody Deason will start for Arizona. Cal has yet to announce a starter.
