Cats Kick Off Fall Invitational with Two Shutout Victories

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona softball opened up the 2018 Arizona Fall Invitational with a pair of run-rule victories on the event's opening day. UA defeated Arizona Western, 11-0 (5 inn.), and Central Arizona, 14-0 (5 inn.), on Friday.

The Arizona Fall Invitational is being held at Lincoln Park while Hillenbrand Stadium is being renovated for the 2019 season. The invitational continues Saturday and Sunday; the full schedule is listed below.

Game 1: Arizona 11, Arizona Western 0 (5 inn.)

Arizona defeated Arizona Western 11-0 in five innings to open up the Arizona Fall Invitational. Jessie Harper (3-for-3, 3 RBI) and Jenna Kean (3-for-3, 2 RBI) each went 3-for-3 in the game while transfer Rylee Pierce brought in three runs in her unofficial Wildcat debut to lead the Wildcat offense, which plated 13 runs on 11 hits.

Taylor McQuillin and Marissa Schuld teamed up to throw a one-hit shutout in the game. McQuillin faced one over the minimum in four innings, allowing just one hit and struck out nine of the 13 batters she faced. Schuld finished the game with two strikeouts in a perfect fifth

Game 2: Arizona 14, Central Arizona 0 (5 inn.)

Buoyed by a 13-run second inning, the Wildcats picked up their second run-rule decision of the night, a 14-0, five-inning win over Central Arizona.

Three Wildcats homered in the 13-run second: Ivy Davis (solo), Reyna Carranco (2-run) and Izzy Pacho (2-run), three of UA's seven extra-base hits in the game. UA out-hit Central Arizona 14-2 in the five-inning game.

Alyssa Denham received the start in the circle and pitched four scoreless innings of two-hit, four-strikeout softball. She was relieved by Vanessa Foreman in the fifth, who did not allow a hit or a run and struck out one.

After going 3-for-3 in the early game, Jenna Kean made it a perfect 6-for-6 on the day as she went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI vs. Central Arizona to lead the offense. Reyna Carranco went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Rylee Pierce went 2-for-2 with an RBI in the game.
