TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona (6-1) lost their first match of the season 6-1 to Houston (7-0) on Sunday.
"I have mixed emotions about today, there were some good things but, more not-so-good things," said head coach
Vicky Maes. "I think we came out a bit flat. Houston did a great job of playing and competing. They're not necessarily better than us, they just played the big point and deuce games better. We hesitated on the big games and if you can't step up in them, you're going to dig yourself into a deep hole. We did that on every single court today and we showed very little emotion, which is something you can always control. Regardless of that, we should never be at home and be "out-emotioned" but the other team. I have a lot of respect for Houston for coming out and playing a complete match. We need to learn from this. Our inexperience showed, but also our leadership wasn't there. If your number one player comes out and doesn't perform, that's not what we want our freshmen to look up to. We have to make some emotional changes, but I certainly think our game is there. We played a great match on Friday so there was no reason for us to come out like this. It's part of a season, you're going to have some bad losses and they're only in vain if you don't learn anything from them."
The Wildcats will head to Las Vegas next weekend to face UNLV on Friday, Feb. 16 at 11 a.m. and University of Wisconsin on Saturday, Feb 17 at 11 a.m. MST.
