TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats remained perfect at home this season, beating North Dakota State 9-4 Saturday afternoon in front of 2,543 fans at Hi Corbett Field.
Â
Winners of three straight, Arizona improved to 8-6 on the season. North Dakota State dropped to 6-8. Junior right-hander
Michael Flynn improved to 2-0 on the season and 8-0 in his career, pitching five innings, allowing just one run on two hits. He struck out three and walked two, before exiting after the fifth.
Â
Cal Stevenson paced the offense, going 3 for 5 with one run scored and an RBI in the win.
Â
Like they did Tuesday against San Diego State and Friday against the Bison, the Wildcats fell behind early, allowing a run in the top of the first inning. But like the previous two games, Arizona fought right back.
Â
Trailing 1-0 in the first, the Cats loaded the bases with no outs after
Mitchell Morimoto and
Ryan Haug drew walks and
Cal Stevenson doubled. Alfonso Rivas then lined into a hard-luck double play and Stevenson was doubled off second. But
Nick Quintana drew a walk to re-load the bases and
Cesar Salazar followed with a walk of his own to score Morimoto and knot the game at one apiece.
Â
That remained the score until the bottom of the third when the Cats added a couple more. With two outs and nobody on, Rivas singled to start a rally. Quintana followed with a single of his own to put two on with two outs for freshman
Blake Paugh. Paugh lined a double down the left field line to score Rivas. Quintana came all the way around from first to score when left fielder Logan Busch bobbled the ball.
Â
Leading 3-1, the Wildcats went right back to work an inning later in the fourth.
Matt Fraizer started the inning with a single and moved up a base when
Travis Moniot walked. Morimoto was then hit by a pitch to again load the bases with no outs. This time, Stevenson singled to score Fraizer. Haug followed with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Moniot and make it 5-1. Rivas then drove in Morimoto on a RBI groundout to give Arizona a 6-1 lead.
Â
Flynn pitched a scoreless fifth and turned it right back over to his offense. The Cats added two more in the bottom of the inning. Paugh opened the inning with a double and
Cameron Cannon followed with a walk. Fraizer dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up a base and then Moniot walked to load the bases for Morimoto.
Â
Morimoto dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt, easily scoring Paugh. Once the pitcher went to field it and fire to first baseman Mason Pierzchalski, Cannon kept running and scored as well on the play, giving Morimoto a two-run sacrifice bunt and making the score 9-1.
Â
North Dakota State added a run in the sixth and Arizona responded in the eighth inning when Rivas drove in Stevenson on a RBI single, before the Bison plated two more in the ninth.
Â
Arizona has now scored 35 runs over its last three games. Quintana stretched his hitting streak to six games and Salazar, with his walk, has reached base safely in all 14 games this season.
Â
Morimoto went 0 for 1 out of the leadoff spot, but scored twice and drove in two runs. Rivas was 2 for 5 with two RBI and a run scored, while Paugh was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI.
Â
The Cats will go for the sweep Sunday. Left-hander
Randy Labaut will get the start. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
