SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Arizona Wildcats ended their three-match losing skid on Friday, sweeping the San Diego State Aztecs 4-0.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a strong doubles performance. The freshman pairing of
Igor Karpovets and
Aaro Pollanen led off with a 6-4 win over Nicholas Mitchell and Sander Andersen.
Alejandro Reguant and
Filip Malbasic clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over the Kirchhoff/Martinez pairing.
Karpovets earned the first singles point for the Cats, defeating Cevallos 6-4, 6-1 on court 1.
Filip Malbasic continued his stellar play, rolling past Rafael Gonzalez Almazan 6-0, 6-2.
Jonas Maier completed the 4-0 sweep with a 6-2, 7-5 win against Ignacio Martinez on court 5.
"Solid win today over a talented SDSU team," said head coach
Clancy Shields. "Our energy was better today and getting the doubles point definitely helped get us off on the right foot in singles. Tomorrow is a big match for us, and we want to end this tournament with a positive record. We just need to focus on being good at the basic things and the rest will take care of itself. We will be up for the challenge tomorrow."
The Wildcats will play their final match in San Diego against Utah State, time TBD.
