TUCSON, Ariz.- Baseball's Quinn Flanagan, softball's Jessie Harper, football's Kurtis Brown and tennis' Elena Schneider are being recognized as the student-athletes of the month for February. These students have been honored for their commitment to earning their undergraduate degree, the ability to maximize their academic potential, and their dedication to academic improvement and growth.
These students have been chosen by the C.A.T.S Academic staff.
Flanagan is a freshman right-handed pitcher from Chandler, Ariz. A graduate from Corona Del Sol, Flanagan earned second-team all state, first-team all-conference and all district honors as a sophomore in high school. During that same season, he posted a 1.56 ERA and pitched 49.1 innings before an arm injury kept him from his junior and senior seasons. He graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA average. Flanagan's counselor,
Jennifer Mewes said: "He's a Pre-Business student who excels both in the classroom and on the field."
Harper is beginning her sophomore year after one of the most productive freshman seasons in UA history. The infielder from Stevenson Ranch, Calif. was named NFCA All-American, NGCA D1 Freshman of the Year finalist, an All-Pac-12 first team member and a three-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week. Harper had 19 home runs in the 2017 season, which was second most among all freshman in the NCAA.
Sarah Howard, Harper's academic counselor, said: "Jessie finished her freshman year strong with straight A's. She had a great fall 2017 and is off to a stellar start in the spring."
Harper is working toward a degree in Physiology.
Brown, a freshman defensive lineman from Bakersfield, Calif., saw action in 10 games this past season. He had 10 total tackles and one sack. During his time at Liberty High School, Brown was a two-time all state team member, three-time all conference pick and the League Defensive Player of the Year as a junior. "Kurtis is always on top of his academic schedule," said academic counselors
Brittney Crawford and
Anna Thompson. "He works ahead, he stays longer, he comes in extra if he needs it, and his effort is reflected in his strong GPA."
Schneider appeared in one match during the spring 2017 season, where she went 0-1. The sophomore from Mount Pleasant, S.C. attended Wando High School for her senior year and was homeschooled previously. Schneider ranked 205
th nationally in her class and was recognized by the Charleston Women's Tennis Association and the South Carolina USTA.
Andy Salgado, Schneider's counselor, speaks highly of her: "Elena is a Pre-Business major who has been an outstanding student since her arrival. This semester she is applying to the Eller College of Management and will certainly continue her academic success."
