TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Wildcats maintained their perfect home record on Tuesday when they beat the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos by a score of 4-3.
Alejandro Reguant and
Jonas Maier kicked off doubles play with a 6-1 win over UCSB's Krustev/Guillin pairing. The Gauchos bounced back with a doubles win of their own, making the match between Hassey/Karpovets and Moreno/Holm the deciding doubles match. Karpovets and Hassey fell behind 3-5, but the freshmen stormed back to win four straight games and earn the first point of the match for the Cats.
Maier got the Cats off to a strong start with his straight sets win over Anders Holm. Reguant won his first set by a score of 6-2, and then battled back after falling behind in the second set tiebreak to earn the third point of the match for Arizona. Freshman
Filip Malbasic added to his team-leading 13 singles wins by defeating Victor Krustev 7-6, 6-4, which also cinched the match for the Wildcats.
"This was a gutsy, gritty performance from our squad," said head coach
Clancy Shields. "We definitely can be sharper in areas, but winning ugly is not always a bad thing. We will need to get a little sharper these next few days and get ready for Pac-12 play coming up."
The Wildcats improve to 12-5 on the season, and will now face 3
rd ranked Stanford on Friday followed by 49
th ranked Cal on Sunday.
