TUCSON, Ariz. – Oregon State got 6 2/3 strong inning from starter Bryce Fehmel on Friday night to top the Arizona Wildcats 6-2 in front of a season-high 4,645 fans at Hi Corbett Field.
Â
Arizona dropped to 17-11 on the season and 2-5 in Pac-12 play. No. 4 Oregon State improved to 24-4 and 7-3 in league play. The Wildcats will now look to even up the series Saturday evening at 7 p.m., in the second game of the series.
Â
Scoreless through two innings, Oregon State scratched the first run across in the third inning off Wildcats starter
Cody Deason. Ninth-place hitter Cadyn Grenier singled with one out and then scored one batter later when leadoff man Steven Kwan doubled down the left field line to score Grenier all the way from first to make it 1-0.
Â
Deason got the next two batters to fly out and get out of the inning without any further damage. Fehmel kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. The Beavers then threatened again off Deason in the fourth, loading the bases with one out. But Deason got first baseman Zak Taylor to strike out looking, and then struck out Grenier swinging to strand the bases loaded.
Â
Trailing 1-0,
Nick Quintana led off the bottom of the fourth with a towering home run down the left field line to tie the game at one apiece. It was Quintana's fourth home run of the season and fourth in his last six games.
Donta Williams also singled in the inning, but the Cats stranded him.
Â
It remained 1-1 until the sixth inning when the Beavers created some separation with a three-run inning. Michael Gretler had a one-out RBI double to make it 2-1. And then with one out and the bases loaded, Deason got Grenier to hit a sharp ground ball that looked like a possible double play. Instead, an error allowed two runs to score, which made it 4-1 in favor of the Beavers.
Â
Oregon State made it 5-1 in the eighth on an RBI double from Grenier. The Cats got the run back in the bottom half on a solo home run from
Cameron Cannon, which was his third in his last four games.
Â
But the Beavers added another run in the ninth on another error to make it 6-2, which stood up as the final.
Â
Deason took the loss, despite tossing six innings and giving up three earned runs. He dropped to 3-2 on the season. Fehmel moved to 4-1.
Â
Quintana went 2 for 3 with a walk to up his average to .305. Williams also had a two-hit night, going 2 for 3.
