Tokyo Bound: Three Wildcats to Compete in the 2020 Olympics

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Three Wildcats, two alumnae and one current player, will compete on the world's biggest stage next summer. Taylor McQuillin (Mexico), Dejah Mulipola (United States) and Danielle O'Toole (Mexico) will participate in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
 

The trio is set to become Arizona's fifth, sixth and seventh Olympians, joining Leah O'Brien (1996, 2000, 2004), Jennie Finch (2004, 2008), Lovie Jung (2004, 2008) and Caitlin Lowe (2008). Arizona has also had two alternates: Nicole Giordano (2004) and Alicia Hollowell (2008). Head Coach Mike Candrea was the USA Softball head coach during its gold-medal performance in 2004 and silver-medal performance in 2008, bringing UA's total to 10 players/coaches with Olympic ties.
 
TAYLOR McQUILLIN

  • Arizona's first four-time all-conference pitcher since Alicia Hollowell (2003-06)
  • Leaves Arizona in the career top-10 in wins (9th – 80), strikeouts (7th – 815), innings pitched (10th – 697.1)

Team Mexico
  • Began playing for Team Mexico this summer
  • Helped lead Mexico to a win in the Americas Olympic Qualifier to punch her ticket to Tokyo
  • Went 2-0 and did not allow a run over eight innings in the Olympic Qualifier

 
DEJAH MULIPOLA

  • A three-year starter at catcher, has started 179  of UA's 182 games at catcher in her career
  • Named Johnny Bench and NFCA Catcher of the Year as a junior in 2019
  • In 2019, became Arizona's first, first-team NFCA All-American catcher since 1998 (Leah Braatz)
  • Two-time all-conference and all-region catcher
  • Will enters her senior season with 47 career home runs, 18th most in UA history
Team USA
  • Competed for the U.S. Women's National Team the summer of 2019 after competing for the USA Japan All-Star Series team in 2018 and for the U.S. Junior Women's National Team in 2017
  • Helped Team USA to first-place finishes in all three major international competitions this summer -- USA Softball International Cup, Pan American Games and Japan Cup

 
DANIELLE O'TOOLE

  • 2017 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year, the first Wildcat to win the award in 13 years
  • Two-time first-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Defensive performer
  • Won 56 games in her two-year Wildcat career with a 1.69 ERA over 81 appearances
Team Mexico
  • Began playing for Team Mexico this summer
  • Helped lead Mexico to a win in the Americas Olympic Qualifier to punch her ticket to Tokyo
  • Went 2-0 with a 0.49 ERA in the Olympic Qualifier, fourth best ERA among qualified pitchers in the event while her 17 strikeouts over 14.1 innings ranked fifth in the tournament
