TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona volleyball dropped its first match of Senior Week to No. 23 UCLA, dropping the Wednesday afternoon meeting in three sets (25-20, 27-25, 25-22).
The Cats kept each set close and hit .242 as team, but had trouble slowing down UCLA's high-powered offense, which hit .282, led by Mac May's 21 kills on .439 hitting.
Paige Whipple had another big match for Arizona, finishing with 21 kills on .246 hitting and adding six digs and two blocks. It is Whipple's 14th straight match with at least 13 kills; she'll enter Saturday's match vs. ASU seven kills shy of 1,000 for her career; she is trying to become the seventh player in school history reach 1,000 kills in her junior season.
A few other Wildcats chasing milestones this week remained on pace as well.
- Kamaile Hiapo entered today 27 digs shy of the Arizona freshman record for digs in a season. The Mesa, Arizona, native had 15 on Wednesday, giving her 358 this season, 12 shy of Candace Nicholson's school record of 370 in 2010.
- Julia Patterson entered today 57 assists shy of moving into sixth place in Arizona history in career assists. The Los Alamitos, California, native had 31 assists on Wednesday, giving her 3,491 in her career, 26 shy of tying Heather McCormack (3,517) for sixth place in UA history.
- Devyn Cross entered today eight blocks shy of becoming the eighth player in Arizona history to record 400 career blocks. The Edwards Air Force Base, California, native had five on Wednesday, giving her 397 for her career, three shy of joining the 400-block club.
Arizona dropped to 15-16, 5-14 Pac-12 on the season while the 23rd-ranked Bruins improved to 17-11, 12-7 Pac-12. The Cats will now get ready for their last match of the 2019 season, a meeting with Arizona State in McKale Center on Saturday at noon.
