A Look Into Arizona Jumps 2020

With less than three weeks until their first indoor meet, the Arizona jump crew is continuing their preparation for the 2020 Track and Field season.

"The preseason has been great," said jumps coach Sheldon Blockburger. "Everybody is super motivated, everybody wants to score some type of points at our conference championships this year and everybody is pushing each other, which is great. The practices have been very competitive."

Unlike many of the other events that have welcomed several newcomers, the Arizona jumpers consist mostly of returning athletes. This experience lends itself to strong leadership within the group.

"The people coming back are helping the younger people," said coach Blockburger. "They all get along great together. They push each other in their running workouts, they push each other in the weight room, they push each other off campus to do the right thing and be great citizens so it's been a great modeling program for the whole group moving the program forward."

These returners include seniors Karla Teran, Justice Summerset and Justin Lewis. Teran will have one more outdoor season in 2021 after only competing indoors this upcoming season. For Summerset and Lewis, this is it.

"The seniors are wanting to go out with a bang. They're great role models for the younger athletes on the team. Karla is actually going to have one more year outdoors in 2021 so she'll just be competing indoors in 2020. Justice and Justin, this will be their last year, and I'm hoping they can get to nationals, do some damage and score some points."

Last year, Teran and Summerset wrapped up their seasons at the NCAA Championships high jump competition where Teran placed fifth with a mark of 1.81m and Summerset took 12th with a jump of 2.18m. Lewis last competed at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds where he placed 13th with a mark of 2.11m.

The group as a whole has big goals for this 2020 season.

"I want them to feel like they became their best," said coach Blockburger. "I want everybody to achieve their own individual goals and leave here feeling like they did the best they possibly could have done, they didn't leave anything on the table, they have no regrets and it was a great, fun season for them."

The Arizona jump crew will be back in action with the rest of the Wildcats on January 10th at Friday Night Duels.
