Cats Wrap Up Series with Cal on Sunday

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Wildcats (17-16, 5-9) and California Golden Bears (19-11, 7-4) complete their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field with a first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. MST.

The Wildcats dropped the series opener on Friday night, 10-7. Matthew Dyer collected three hits in game one, raising his season batting average to .407, while outfielder Justin Wylie collected his first home run of the year.

The Golden Bears took game two, 7-3, on Saturday night. With the series victory in Cal's hands, the Wildcats will be looking to avoid the sweep with a win in the series finale on Sunday.

SINCE LAST TIME: Since the last set of games notes, the Wildcats secured a wild 14-13 road victory over the Grand Canyon Antelopes...Arizona scored six runs over the final two innings to walk away victorious — the difference in the game was Cameron Cannon's go-ahead RBI double in the top of the ninth...Nick Quintana led Arizona on offense, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored, one double, two RBI, and his team-leading seventh home run of the year...Dayton Dooney collected three hits, giving him multiple base knocks in three of his last four games...Austin Wells (25 games) and Donta Williams (23 games) both extended their on-base streaks.

TWO'S COMPANY: The Wildcats currently lead the Pac-12 and rank sixth nationally with 77 doubles this season (first: Mississippi State, 87)...Arizona's 77 two baggers are good for third most among Power Five conference teams...The Cats are currently on pace for 139 doubles this season, which would be the best single-season mark posted by the program since the 2005 team belted 153 doubles...Of Arizona's 77 doubles this year, 18 have come as the leadoff hit in the inning — Donta Williams leads this category with seven leadoff doubles this year.

CLEANUP, AISLE Q: Arizona infielder Nick Quintana has occupied the cleanup spot in the Wildcats lineup 44 times during his collegiate career...In those 44 games in which he hit cleanup, Arizona has posted a record of 28-16 (.636)...As a cleanup hitter this season (17 games), Quintana has hit .328 (20x61) with 21 runs scored, four doubles, four home runs, 17 RBI, 17 walks, a .494 on-base percentage, and a .590 slugging percentage...Quintana has six multi-hit games and seven multi-hit performances while hitting cleanup this season.

DOONEY DINGERS: Freshman infielder Dayton Dooney has hit four home runs in his last seven games, two against Arizona State and two against Washington...He has hit five dingers this year, four of which have come in Pac-12 play; the Wildcats program record for conference home runs from a freshman was set at 8 by Shelley Duncan in 1999...All five of Dooney's home runs have come in games televised on Pac-12 Network...Dooney, a switch hitter, has swatted all five of his home runs from the left side of the plate...As a prep player at Poway High School, Dooney hit just five home runs in four seasons.

FRESH PRINCE OF WELLS-AIR: Arizona catcher Austin Wells is putting together one of the best freshman seasons in Wildcats history...Through 31 games, Wells has hit .381 with 40 runs scored, 15 extra-base hits, 31 RBI, and nearly as many walks (23) as strikeouts (24)...His .381 batting average is currently ranked first among all Power Five conference freshmen, third among all Division I freshmen (first: INF Craig Larsen, Penn, .398), and 14th among all Division I catchers...Wells' 40 runs scored are second most among all Division I freshmen, tied for 16th most in the nation, and third most in the Pac-12...His 45 base hits are tied for fourth most among all Division I freshman...His .473 on-base percentage is the eighth most among Division I freshmen with at least 80 at-bats this year...His 31 RBI are 11th most among all Division I freshmen...The Arizona freshman record for batting average was set at .374 by Dave Page in 1981...Wells' success has continued well into Pac-12 play as well, with his conference batting average currently sitting at .417, the sixth best conference mark in the Pac-12...Arizona's freshman conference record for batting average was set at .418 by T.J. BACKSTOP BASHERS: Arizona's catching tandem of Matthew Dyer and Austin Wells are currently first and second on the team in batting average at .395 and .381, respectively...Dyer and Wells hit back-to-back in the Wildcats lineup all last weekend against Washington and combined to hit a combined .593 (16x27) with 14 runs scored, three doubles, three triples, one home run, and eight RBI...Among all Division I catchers, Dyer and Wells rank 11th and 14th in batting average, respectively, and those rankings jump up to 3rd and 4th when looking at Power Five conference catchers...Combined, Dyer and Wells have accounted for 25.0% of the Wildcats runs, 20.0% of the club's RBI, 20.9% of the extra-base hits, and 26.2% of the hits this season.

BUSTER POSEY AWARD: Last week Wildcats catcher Matthew Dyer was named to the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award watch list...This award was formerly known as the Johnny Bench Award, and is presented annually to the nation's top division one collegiate catcher...Dyer is currently first on the team and 4th in the Pac-12 with a .395 (45x114) batting average, while his 45 hits are tied for fifth most in the conference and his 67 total bases rank eighth on the circuit...Dyer has hit safely in all but eight games this year, with 15 multi-hit performances, and has logged a .985 fielding percentage in 203 chances.

FAMILIAR FACES: Four Wildcats players - Austin Wells, Cameron Cannon, Donta Williams, and Nick Quintana - have played in all 31 of Arizona's games this season...Wells, Cannon, and Quintana are the only three to have started in every game...Both Quintana and Cannon played and started in every game (56) for the Wildcats in 2018 as well...Quintana has started in 90 consecutive games for Arizona, dating back to June 2, 2017 against Sam Houston State, and has missed just one game in his Arizona career (May 28, 2017 against California)...Cannon has started in 87 straight games for Arizona, dating back to the first game of 2018 (February 17 vs. Bryant, GM1).

STREAKONOMICS: Catcher/first baseman Austin Wells and outfielder Donta Williams both have on-base streaks that have reached double digits...Wells has reached base safely in 25 games, while Williams has gotten on base in each of his last 23 games...During Wells' streak, dating back to February 23 at Houston, he has hit .383 (36x94) with 30 runs scored, six doubles, three triples, two home runs, 21 RBI, 20 walks, and a .483 on-base percentage...Over the course of Williams' streak, stretching back to February 27 against New Mexico, he has hit .292 (26x89) with 28 runs scored, seven doubles, three triples, one home run, 16 RBI, 14 walks, and a .413 on-base percentage...As far as hitting streaks go, catcher Matthew Dyer currently leads the team with an active eight-game hit streak...During Dyer's streak, going back to March 23 at San Diego State, he is hitting .571 (20x35) with 11 runs scored, six doubles, two triples, three RBI, and four walks.

SCHEDULE ADDITION: Arizona Wildcats baseball has scheduled an additional game to their 2019 regular season schedule, a Monday, May 13 matchup against the Sam Houston State Bearkats at Hi Corbett Field...This game was scheduled as a replacement for the Wildcats cancelled home game against Xavier on March 12, brings Arizona's regular season schedule back to 56 games, and will now serve as the final regular season home game at Hi Corbett Field in 2019...This will be the fifth matchup between the Wildcats and Bearkats in program history, with the all-time series currently even at two wins apiece...All four previous games between the two schools have come in the postseason, with Arizona winning two over Sam Houston State in the 2016 Lafayette NCAA Regional and the Bearkats taking two wins from the Wildcats in the 2017 Lubbock NCAA Regional...Sam Houston State has been selected to the NCAA Tournament and appeared in a Regional in five of the last seven seasons, and progressed to the Super Regionals in 2017...The Bearkats currently sport an RPI of 60, giving the Wildcats the opportunity to close out this year's home schedule with a quality win.

EXTRA EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT: The Wildcats have excelled at hitting to the gaps this year, and as a result are currently second in the Pac-12 with 129 extra-base hits on the year (first: Arizona State, 131)...No other team has reached triple digits, with the next closest team after the Wildcats being UCLA with 93...Arizona's offense has hammered out a league-leading 77 doubles and 20 triples to go with 32 home runs, which stands as the third-best mark on the circuit...Infielder Cameron Cannon leads the Wildcats in doubles (18), and extra-base hits (23) - the next closest players on the team are outfielder Donta Williams and catcher Austin Wells with 15 extra-base hits...Williams and Matthew Dyer both have four triples, tied for the most in the Pac-12.
