Baseball Set for Doubleheader with USC on Sunday

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The final conference home series of the year is upon the Arizona Wildcats (22-24, 10-14) as the host the USC Trojans (20-24-1, 9-11-1) this weekend at Hi Corbett Field.

Arizona took the series opener, 12-4, behind a dominant outing from starting pitcher Randy Labaut and another explosive effort from the Wildcats offense. Labaut struck out seven over 7.0 innings of work, while shortstop Cameron Cannon and third baseman Nick Quintana combined for seven runs and seven RBI.

Game two on Saturday night was halted in the bottom of the second inning. It will begin at 12:05 p.m. MST on the Pac-12 Networks, with game three to follow 45 minutes following the conclusion of game two.

SINCE LAST TIME: Since the last set of game notes, the Wildcats dropped a home midweek contest to the Arizona State Sun Devils, 10-7...Four different players posted multi-hit performances on the night, led by shortstop Cameron Cannon who went 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI...Center fielder Donta Williams (2x5, R, RBI), second baseman Dayton Dooney (2x5, R), and left fielder Justin Wylie (2x3, 2 R, 2B, RBI, BB) all joined Cannon with multiple hits...Southpaw Avery Weems got the start for the Cats and struck out five batters over 2.2 innings of work...Gil Luna (0.1 IP) and Jonathan Guardado (1.0 IP) both notched scoreless relief outings, while George Arias Jr. limited ASU to two unearned runs on just two hits over 2.2 frames.

FRESHMAN FRENZY: Freshman catcher/first baseman Austin Wells has put together one of the best freshman campaigns by a Wildcats player in recent history...Wells' .346 batting average is the best mark posted by an Arizona freshman (min. 100 AB) since Nick Hundley hit .361 in 2003...He has scored 55 runs this season, the second-most in the Pac-12, the third-most among all Division I freshmen in the country, and the most logged by an Arizona freshman since infielder Jason Donald scored 58 runs in 64 games in 2004...His 45 RBI are tied for seventh most in the Pac-12, tied for 10th most among all Division I freshmen, and are the most by a Wildcat freshman since Joey Rickard collected 51 RBI in 2010...Finally, his five triples are tied for second most in the Pac-12 and are tied for the second most legged out by an Arizona freshman since Brad Boyer hit eight triples in 2003 (also with five triples: Johnny Field, 2011; T.J. Steele, 2006).

WHAT A WEEK!: After a standout stretch at the plate last week, Arizona Wildcats infielder Nick Quintana was named Pac-12 Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday...Across four games, Quintana posted a .476 batting average (10-for-21) with nine runs scored, four doubles, one home run, 11 RBI, and more walks (3) than strikeouts (2)...Additionally, he registered an on-base percentage of .520 and a .810 slugging percentage as the Wildcats went 3-1 including a weekend sweep of the Oregon Ducks at Hi Corbett Field...Quintana is the first Arizona position player to be tabbed as the Pac-12 Player of the Week since Cal Stevenson earned the recognition in May 2017.

STREAKONOMICS: Catcher Matthew Dyer — who is day-to-day with a bruised hand — currently sports a 20-game hit streak, which stands as the longest logged by a Wildcats player this season and the longest since Seth Mejias-Brean (2012) and Jeff Van Houten (2005) notched 21-game hit streaks...Over the course of Dyer's current streak — which began on March 25 at San Diego State — he has hit .461 (41x89) with 23 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, two home runs, and eight RBI...The streak has raised his season batting average from .316 to his current team-best mark of .393...During the streak, Dyer has logged multiple hits 12 times, including two four-hit games and five three-hit performances.

WIN CITY: Nick Quintana, Austin Wells, and Donta Williams — the three Wildcats players that call Las Vegas their hometown — combined to go 9-for-11 with nine runs scored, three doubles, and 11 RBI in Arizona's 28-7 win over Oregon on Sunday...The trio from the 702 have combined to hit .310 (163x526) with 146 runs scored, 61 extra-base hits, and 131 RBI this season...They have accounted for 31.7% of the team's hits, 35.0% of the program's runs, 31.9% of the club's extra-base hits, and 34.4% of the Cats RBI this season...Wells and Williams have combined to hit nine triples this year, which is more than five entire Pac-12 teams have hit all season...Between them, the Win City squad has logged 46 multi-hit games and 40 multi-RBI games this year.

GO WITH THE FLOW: With his two-run home run on April 26 at No. 3 Stanford, Wildcats infielder Nick Quintana became the first Arizona player in over a decade to swat 10+ home runs in back-to-back seasons...Quintana hit 14 homers for the Cats as a sophomore in 2018...The last players to accomplish this feat were C.J. Ziegler and Brad Glenn, who both pulled it off in the 2007 and 2008 seasons...Ziegler hit 13 HR in 2007 and 20 HR in 2008, while Glenn hit 10 HR in 2007 and 14 HR in 2008...Quintana's three-run home run on Saturday against Oregon gave him 31 career home runs with the Wildcats, pushing him into a tie for eighth most in program history...Quintana has hit 19-of-31 career HR at home at Hi Corbett Field, while 22-of-31 HR have come off right-handed pitchers.
