SCOTTSDALE -- The Arizona Wildcats opened their season in style at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate this weekend and finished it off with a second-place showing at the competitive 15-team event at Mirabel Golf Course on Sunday. The Cats finished at -31 for the 54-hole tournament, seven strokes behind winner, Arizona State. The Wildcats' total score of 809 is the program's lowest ever at a 54-hole event.
In his tournament debut as a wildcat, freshman Aidric Chan placed the highest on the leaderboard for the Wildcats, finishing tied for 3rd place at 9-under par. Chan's total score of 201 is the 11th-lowest ever in a 54-hole event for the Wildcats. Chan went 66-65-70 in his first outing as a Wildcat.
Seniors Briggs Duce and David Laskin also had strong performances in the opening tournament of the year and both finished the tournament tied for 8th place at 8-under par. Junior Trevor Werbylo had the low round of the day for Arizona on Sunday, shooting a 2-under, 68. He finished the tournament at even par. Senior Brad Reeves finished in 41st place at +1.
"We didn't have a great start to the round this morning and I was very proud of the fight and composure our team showed," said head coach Jim Anderson. "We had a few mistakes that turned into doubles or more and we can certainly clean that up in the future. All in all, we had a great week and started our season in a positive direction. Anytime you post 31 under par, you've done a lot of things very well as a team. Aidric had an awesome debut and having two others in the top 10 with Briggs and David is a great sign too. We have a short break and look forward to another challenge in Albuquerque."
The Wildcats look ahead to their next tournament, the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, NM on September 27th-28th at the University of New Mexico Golf Course. Keep up with the Wildcats on social media, on Twitter, @arizonamgolf, and Instagram, @arizonagolf.
