Tennis Alum Danielle Friedman

The Arizona Women's Tennis team played their first match in Newport Beach, Calif. where they had the honor of meeting a former Wildcat, Danielle Friedman. Friedman came out to support the Wildcats in their first match of the season against Texas A&M.

Friedman played from 1988-1992 under coach Becky Bell. Like many girls on the team today, Friedman lived in the dorms as a freshman and was nervous about living far from home, but luckily she had her teammates.

During her time at Arizona, practice was much like it is today. She said they would practice six days a week for three hours each day. Weights would be in the morning two days a week during the fall semester and in the evening during the spring.

"Becky's favorite drill was to take us all on at the net in volley-volley games," said Friedman. "She had very quick hands and great volleys. We also worked on serves and returns and played singles and doubles matches all the time."

Some of Freidman's fondest memories of being a Wildcat was winning the Pac-10 Championships, having a final ranking of No. 7, beating teams that were ranked higher and dinners on the road with the team.

For Friedman, being an Arizona Wildcat was an honor.

"Representing Arizona was something to be proud of," Friedman said. "I was surrounded by Olympians, world record holders, tons of amazing athletes, top trainers, and coaches that helped me achieve my athletic goals. It was very special."
