TUCSON, Ariz. — The Wildcats returned to Arizona Stadium on Saturday night for a 90-play scrimmage.

The clean, high-energy scrimmage featured highlights from sophomore running back Michael Wiley, who scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, and senior kicker Lucas Havrisik, who drilled long field goals of 57 and 53 yards.

"We got just about everybody in, we've got some depth," head coach Kevin Sumlin said. "I thought our guys competed and there weren't a whole lot of penalties, I think we had one [penalty] on offense and one penalty on defense in 90 plays, which that's the first thing you've got to do to win games."

Sumlin, on which newcomers have impressed over the first week of fall camp: "Our two grad transfers on the defensive line, Aaron Blackwell and Roy Lopez, have come with a work mentality. They're older guys, they're really strong, they've played football, they're tough, and I think they bring an attitude to our whole defensive line."

Havrisik, who connected on two long field goals during Saturday's scrimmage, hit two 50+ yard field goals in 2020, becoming the first Arizona kicker to accomplish the feat since 1996. He clocked makes of 53 yards in the season opener at Hawai'i and 50 yards against Washington later in the year.

Featured Returner — Junior DB Christian Young

Along with yesterday's featured returner, Lorenzo Burns, Young will be relied upon heavily in 2020 as one of the defensive secondary's most experienced players. Over three seasons in Tucson, Young has seen time in 23 games with eight starts. While spending time at both cornerback and safety, he has tallied 39 tackles, five passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

Featured Newcomer — Freshman RB Jalen John

The Wildcats add another big tailback to their stable with John, who journeyed from Portland, Oregon to join the Cats in Tucson. The 5-foot-11, 222-pound freshman running back dazzled fans for three years at Lakeridge High School, where he picked up 4,067 yards and 48 touchdowns on 476 carries, good enough for an eye-popping average of 8.5 yards per carry. John improved every year of his prep career, highlighted by a 2,000+ yard, 21 touchdown senior season in 2019 that earned him second team 6A All-State honors. During that 2019 campaign, John eclipsed the 100-yard mark in all but two games and found the end zone multiple times on eight occasions, including a pair of four-touchdown performances.

"I chose Arizona because when I got here and visited, I knew this was exactly what I wanted," he said. "It felt like family and nobody was putting up a facade just because they wanted me to go here."
