TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona junior guard
Bendu Yeaney has been granted a waiver by the NCAA and will be eligible to compete immediately for the Wildcats. Starting with the 2020-21 season, Yeaney will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Yeaney, a native of Portland, Ore., averaged 8.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in 76 games for Indiana while making 69 starts over her career. She helped lead Indiana to the NCAA Tournament in 2019 as she scored in double-figures in 20 games, including the two NCAA Tournament games she played in. She scored a season-high 17 points in the first round of the NCAA Tournament vs. Texas and had a double-double vs. Northern Illinois (17 points & 11 rebounds).
"We are thrilled to have Bendu eligible for this season, we just got a lot better," said head coach
Adia Barnes. "I've known and had a great relationship with her for a long time and I can't wait to coach her. She's a great kid and adds a ton to our team not just on the court, but off the court as well. Her defensive intensity and athleticism is going to take our team to another level and I can't wait to see her play in the Pac-12. I would like to thank the NCAA for their consideration of Bendu's situation, and I am grateful that she was ruled eligible."
"I'm excited to do something special on the floor with my teammates," Yeaney said. "We have major goals for the season and I can't wait to show out in front of Wildcat Nation."
During the 2018-19 season, she averaged 9.7 points, 4.1 rebounds 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals per game while starting 33 of the 34 games. She led the Hoosiers in steals and was typically tasked with guarding the opposing team's leading scorer.
Yeaney was a four-year varsity player at St. Mary's Academy where she averaged 28.3 points, 13.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 4.6 steals per game. She was a 2017 McDonalds All-American Nominee, a two-time First Team Three Rivers League selection and was the 2017 Three Rivers League Player of the Year.
