#ThrowbackThursday: 2001-02 Pac-10 Tournament Champions

TUCSON, Ariz. – The 10th installment of our #ThrowbackThursday series takes a look at the 2001-02 team that went 12-6 in Pac-10 play during the regular season to tie for second place before going on to win the Pac-10 Tournament in Los Angeles. It marked the 10th conference championship – regular season and tournament combined - under head coach Lute Olson.
 
During the regular season, Arizona won the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, the Wooden Classic, the Southwest Showdown and the Fiesta Bowl Classic. In non-conference play, the Wildcats defeated Maryland, Florida, Illinois and Purude.
 
In the Pac-10 Tournament, Arizona opened with a 73-56 win over Arizona State and followed that up with a triumph over California the following day. In the title game, the Cats posted an 81-71 win over USC.
 
Following wins over UC Santa Barbara and Wyoming during the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, the Wildcats lost to Oklahoma in the West Regional semifinal in San Jose. It marks the second time in four seasons that the Sooners ended Arizona's season.

  • A pair of Wildcats earned All-American honors following the season, with Jason Gardner earning second team honors from cnnsi.com and Basketball America and third team accolades from the Associated Press and NABC. Luke Walton was a first team All-American according to the Wooden Award and collegehoopsinsider.com and second team recognition from The Sporting News and Basketball News.
  • Gardner was the team's leading scorer, averaging 20.4 points to go along with 4.6 assists. He also shot 38.4 percent from the 3-point line and 80.0 percent in 240 attempts from the free throw line.
  • Luke Walton was second on the team in scoring at 15.7 points and led the team in rebounding (7.3) and assists (6.3).
  • Freshman Salim Stoudamire was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year after he averaged 12.8 points and connected at a 45.3 percent clip from the 3-point line and 90.4 percent at the free throw line.
  • Rick Anderson was the fourth Wildcat to average double figures in scoring (12.4) and he also pulled down 7.2 rebounds per contest.
  • In Pac-10 play, Channing Frye averaged 10.8 points per game and shot 60.5 percent from the floor. In 34 games played that season, he posted 9.5 points per game and team high 50 total blocked shots.
  • The 2002 Pac-10 Tournament marked the first time the conference had hosted a tournament since 1990.
  • On the way to winning the Pac-10 Tournament, Walton was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player with Gardner and Stoudamire joining him on the all-tournament team.
