TUCSON, Ariz. — A dominant start from
Garrett Irvin and a go-ahead home run from
Noah Turley powered the Arizona Wildcats (34-18, 15-11) to a 5-2 victory over the No. 2 Oregon State Beavers (40-10, 19-7) on Saturday night.
A raucous crowd of 5,323 watched the Wildcats even the series on Senior Night and set up a Sunday rubber match.
Irvin kept the potent Beavers offense in check for seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out a season high nine batters. He earned the win to improve to 5-3 on the year and lowered his ERA to 2.65.
Turley's second home run in as many nights was the difference for the Cats. Second baseman
Garen Caulfield led off the seventh with a single through the left side of the Beavers infield, setting up the mammoth two-run blast from Turley to put Arizona in front 3-1. Catcher
Daniel Susac followed five batters later with a two-run single into center to provide insurance runs.
Another southpaw, freshman
Eric Orloff, tossed the final two innings and allowed just one run while striking out two.
