TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona Baseball standout catcher
Daniel Susac has been selected as a semifinalist for the 2022 Dick Howser Trophy, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced on Thursday morning.
The Dick Howser Trophy, now in its 35th year, is awarded to the top player in college baseball based on two rounds of national voting.
Susac is one of three Pac-12 player selected as semifinalists, and the fourth player in Arizona history to earn semifinalist status for the Dick Howser Trophy.
Through 53 games this year, Susac leads the team and ranks second in the Pac-12 with a .368 batting average. His 84 hits this year pace the conference and rank sixth among all Division I players in the nation. Susac has logged more multi-hit performances (29) this year than games with zero or one hit (24). Across a team-leading 382 chances as the Wildcats everyday starting catcher he has posted an impressive .987 fielding percentage.
The Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball's most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.
Susac and the Wildcats wrap up their regular season schedule with a three-game road series against the Oregon Ducks beginning tonight. More information on the series in Eugene can be found in the
series preview.
