Hutton and Sanchez Lopez Lead Wildcats at Pac-12 Championships

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Arizona Cross Country competed at the Pac-12 Championships on Friday. This year's conference championship meet was hosted by the University of Washington at Chambers Creek Regional Park. Ian Sanchez Lopez and Sailor Hutton ended as the top finishers for the men's and women's teams.

"We competed against some of the toughest teams in the country today," said Head Coach Bernard Lagat. "We came here, we learned, and we competed well. Now we can use that experience for the future championships coming up soon, the NCAA Western Regionals. Coming back, we know where we are and we are going to compete tough."

Ian Sanchez Lopez and freshman Michael Urbanski led the way for the Wildcats in the men's 8k race. The two finished right next to each other, with Sanchez Lopez clocking a time of 24:00.5 and finishing 36th and Urbanski running a personal best time of 24:00.9 and placing 37th. Urbanski lowered his previous personal best 8k time by over 30 seconds. Additionally, Sanchez Lopez has now finished first for the Arizona Men at their two latest competitions. At one point during the race, he was placed as high as 10th. Noah Jodon finished as the team's third runner with a time of 24:25.3. He was followed by Brennan Foody (24:28.1) and Cooper Quigley (24:41.0). Furthermore, freshmen Gibson Kibia and Andrew Gibby logged big personal bests on the day. Kibia shaved over a minute off his PR with a time of 24:57.80 and Gibby lowered his PR by over 30 seconds with a time of 25:27.70.

On the women's side, senior Sailor Hutton clocked a season best time of 20:33.9 on her way to a top finish for the Arizona Women. Hutton placed 41st overall and has finished first for the team in all their competitions this year. Hutton was followed by fellow senior Alisa Lyesina, who ran a time of 21:14.8. Freshman Sorcha Shiu was the team's third runner, clocking a time of 21:46.5. She was followed by Kelly Wetteland (22:03.1), who is a member of Arizona triathlon's team, and senior Johnnie Mitchell (22:07.5). Wetteland also scored for the ladies at the Dave Murray Invitational earlier in the season. This is the third consecutive week that an Arizona triathlete has competed and scored for the Wildcats.
