TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona diver
Delaney Schnell, one of the most accomplished student-athletes in school history, has been selected as the Pac-12 Woman of the Year for the 2022-23 athletics season, the conference announced this morning.
The Pac-12 Woman of the Year Award honors graduating student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, community service, and leadership. Since the award began in 2006 and through Schnell's selection, the Wildcats have boasted seven winners, the most in the conference. Six of Arizona's honorees have come from the Swimming & Diving program.
Schnell's recognition as the Pac-12 Woman of the Year puts her in contention to take home the award at a national level, a feat previously accomplished by three other Wildcat women from the swim & dive program: Justin Schluntz (swimming, 2010), Lacey Nymeyer (swimming, 2009), and Whitney Myer (swimming, 2007). At January's NCAA Convention in Phoenix, the national Top 30 honorees will be celebrated, and the NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced.
Across six years and five seasons at Arizona, Schnell put together on of the most impressive resumes in Wildcat history, one that boasted success at the individual, conference, national, and international levels. The Tucson capped her collegiate career with an NCAA National Championship in the platform dive as a graduate student. During her time with Arizona she won three Pac-12 Diver of the Year awards, six Pac-12 diving championships spread across all three events, one Olympic silver medal, three FINA World Championship medals, earned 12 All-America selections, and set program records in all three diving events. Schnell's silver medal in the 10-Meter Synchro at the Tokyo Olympics marked the first medal ever earned by the United States in the event.
Schnell's excellence extended well beyond the pool as well, having earned a pair of CSC/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, three CSCAA Scholar All-America selections, and the 2023 Pac-12 Women's Swimming & Diving Scholar Athlete of the Year award. She earned her undergraduate degree in psychological sciences with a 3.815 GPA and continued her pursuits with a 4.00 GPA en route to earning a master's in clinical speech and pathology.
An active member of both Tucson and the greater diving community, Schnell volunteered her time and skills to multiple community programs such as collaborating with the University's Team IMPACT, a program that allows college athletes to partners with children with chronic illnesses. The standout Wildcat has also partnered with local Girl Scout troops as well as local Boys and Girls Clubs in an attempt to give back to her growing community.
