Cross Country Heads to California for UC Riverside Invitational
09/14/2023 | Cross Country
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Arizona Cross Country team heads to California this weekend to continue their season with the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday.
"We are excited to start our racing season at the 42nd UC Riverside Invitational this Saturday," said Head Coach Bernard Lagat. "The women's team is looking to defend as the champions from last year's meet. Freshman Sorcha Shiu is making her collegiate debut and it will be thrilling to see her race in the University of Arizona uniform. The men's side is strong, competitive, and now has more experience. Last year they had success as an all-freshman team, but this year we are looking to challenge for the title."
The competition begins at 7:15 a.m. MST on Saturday with the running of the women's 6k. That will be followed by the men's 8k at 7:50 a.m. MST. The meet is hosted by UC Riverside with the action taking place at the UCR Ag Ops Course. Additionally, results for the morning of competition can be found here.
The Wildcats opened the 2023 season two weeks ago with their team camp at the George Kyte Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz. Both the Arizona Men and Women finished third overall at the competition. Cooper Quigley was the top finisher for the men in the 4.5-mile run, clocking a PR time to finish 12th overall. For the women's team, Sailor Hutton was the top finisher, running a personal best in the 2.5-mile run to place 10th overall. Across both teams, the Wildcat runners posted 11 total personal bests on the day.
Five of the team's six new freshmen made their debuts in Flagstaff: Michael Urbanski, Andrew Gibby, Gibson Kibia, Noah Ray, and Sage Patzer. Missing from the bunch was Sorcha Shiu, who will make her season debut this Saturday at the UC Riverside Invitational. The talented freshman joins the Wildcats this season after winning both the U20 3000m steeplechase and the U20 800m this summer at the 2023 Canadian Track and Field Championships. Shiu will look to continue that success this cross country season along with the rest of the Wildcats.
The Wildcats are very familiar with the UCR Ag Ops Course, as during last season they competed at the venue on three sperate occasions for the UC Riverside Invitational, the UCR Highlander Invitational, and the Pac-12 Championships. The Arizona Women won the UC Riverside Invitational in 2022 with contributions from both Sailor Hutton and Alisa Lyesina who will be competing at this year's event as well. The Arizona Men placed sixth at the 2022 competition.
Coach Lagat added, "Team captains Sailor Hutton and Cooper Quigley will lead the way for the women's and men's teams respectively. We have had great training sessions and now it's time to show everyone what we've got. Watch out, the Wildcats are coming!"
A meet recap will be posted to ArizonaWildcats.com detailing the competition results. Live updates will also be posted to @ArizonaTrack on Twitter.
