Track & Field Continues Indoor Season in Albuquerque on Saturday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Arizona Track & Field will continue the indoor season on Saturday with their third meet in two weeks: the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational. The meet is hosted by the University of New Mexico at the Albuquerque Convention Center and will be the first of two meets that the Wildcats will participate in at the venue this indoor season.

"Now that we have game film with the team, we can set realistic goals for the season," said Head Coach Fred Harvey. "It's early, and this week we will have athletes in their primary events and the expectations are high based upon week one. We have top level teams, and now we have to make things happen."

The meet is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. MST on Saturday with three field events: the women's high jump and both the men's and women's shot put. Track events will get underway at 8:20 a.m. MST with the men's 3000m. The meet can be purchased to stream through FloTrack, found here. Live results can be found here

The Wildcats opened the 2023-24 indoor season last weekend with a pair of meets. The majority of the team competed at the NAU Friday Night Axe'em Open last Friday in Flagstaff, Ariz., while the distance crew traveled to Seattle, Wash., for the University of Washington Preview last Saturday. The Wildcats posted a stellar performance in Flagstaff, notching 15 top-three finishes, with seven of those being first-place wins. The distance crew saw several personal bests in Seattle and opened up the season well at the ultra-competitive meet.

Of the Wildcats' seven victories in Flagstaff, three came from freshmen making their collegiate debuts. Jade Brown won the women's 60m, Tyler Michelini won the men's shot put, and Ava Simms won the women's 400m. The team's other wins came from Tapenisa Havea in the women's shot put, Diana Ramos in the women's high jump, Jacob Samford in the men's 400m, and the women's 4x400m relay team. Both Havea and Ramos finished with new indoor personal bests on the day. Ramos' high jump clearance of 5-11.25 (1.81m) solidified her as the Venezuelan record holder in the indoor event.

Brown's time in the 60m of 7.32 is just 0.07 seconds off the Arizona school record. Additionally, Trayvion White-Austin matched his personal record in the men's 60m, finishing second with a time of 6.70, which is only 0.04 seconds off the school record. Another highlight on the day was the Wildcats' dominance in the men's shot put as they finished first, second, and third in the event with Michelini, Zach Landa, and Youssef Koudssi. In Seattle, three Wildcats clocked personal bests in distance events: Sailor Hutton, Kara Mickelson, and Cade Russo.

A meet recap will be posted to ArizonaWildcats.com detailing the competition results. Live updates will also be posted to @ArizonaTrack on X.
