Arizona Wraps ITA Southwest Regionals

TEMPE, Ariz. - Men's Tennis completed their weekend at ITA Southwest Regionals. 

Sunday
Arizona entered into R16 of doubles Sunday morning. After two days of play, Wildcat duo Rozin/Ludoski fell 4-8 to No. 1 seeded Johnson/Van Loben Sels (UCLA). Arizona's freshmen duo Gustafsson/Jansson also fell 4-8 Sunday morning to Klaassen/Niedner (San Diego). 

Christsensen, the only Wildcat left standing in a main draw, went head to head with Andy Nguyen of UCI. Christensen took the first set in a 7-6(5) breaker, dropped the second 1-6, and came back to win the third 6-0 to advance into the quarterfinals. The senior went on to fall to No. 10 seed Noah Zamora (UCI) 4-6, 5-7 in the quarterfinals, ending his run at regionals. 

Wildcat sophomores Stelse and Cabrera-Bello were making their way through the consolation draw of the tournament. Sunday morning, Cabrera-Bello won over Sherif (UCI) 6-3, 6-4, then fell to Brown (UCSB) in consolation. quarterfinals Stelse was victorious over Ginat (ASU) 6-4, 6-3, he went on to defeat Weststrate (Cal Poly) by default of a withdraw to advance to the consolation semifinal where he will play Stian Klaassen of San Diego on Monday morning. His opponent Monday also withdrew from the match. 

Saturday
The Cats opened Saturday in round of 32 of doubles and singles play. In doubles, Rozin/Ludoski defeated Loizas/Volonski (GCU) 8-5. The pair went on to fall to Johnson/Van Loben Sels (UCLA) 4-8 in R16. Freshmen duo Gustafsson/Jansson defeated their opponents in R32 as well, taking down Vergara Del Puerto/Phillips (ASU) 5-8. The pair ultimately fell in R16 to Klaassen/Niedner (San Diego) 4-8. 

In singles play, Christensen took down Josserand (SDSU) in two breaker sets 7-6(3), 7-6(3) to advance to R16.  Rozin dropped his match against Brunkow (UCSB) 2-6, 6-2, 2-6. Jansson fell 4-6, 2-6 to Ballotta (UCLA), and Ludoski fell 6-7(4), 4-6 to Rolland (UCSB). 

Friday
Arizona kicked off the day with the first round of doubles. Freshman and sophomore duo Matthias Kask and Cole Stelse fell to Mikel Anderson and Nicola Cigna (ASU) in an 8-7(4) tiebreaker. Wildcat duos Sasha Rozin / Zoran Ludoski, Casper Christensen / Iñaki Cabrera-Bello and Filip Gustafsson / Oskar Jansson each have a bye and will begin in the round of 32 tomorrow. 

In the round of 64 of singles play, Christensen defeated his opponent, Zach Stephens, 6-2, 6-2 to advance. Later that afternoon, Rozin took down Rithvik Krishna (UC Irvine) 6-4, 6-0. Also advancing to the round of 32 will be freshmen Zoran Ludoski, taking down Chris Papa (Pepperdine) 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(6), and Oskar Jansson, who was victorious over Martin Vergara Del Puerto 6-2, 7-5.

Cabrera-Bello fell in singles play 6-3, 5-7, 4-6 to Sebastian Nothaft of Loyola Marymount. Kask fell 6-7(12), 3-6 to Linus Carlsson Halldin of Pepperdine after a 14 point breaker in the first set. Stelse lost his battle to Tanner Povey of ASU 4-6, 2-6, and Gustafsson fell to Diogo Morais of UCSB 4-6, 4-6. The Cats will continue play through the consolation draw. 

Thursday
Representing the Wildcats on the first day of regionals was freshmen Matthias Kask and Santiago Padilla-Cote in the qualifying singles round. Padilla-Cote dropped his match in the first round 6-7(4), 6-4, 4-6 to John Cross (Cal Poly). Kask was victorious in his match, winning 6-2, 7-5 over Andreas Loizas (GCU) to make it into the main draw.
