Candiotti Fires Complete Game Shutout as Wildcats Top Cardinal, 5-0

TUCSON, Ariz. — Behind a masterful complete game shutout effort from Clark Candiotti, the Arizona Wildcats (28-17, 16-7) beat the Stanford Cardinal (20-24, 11-12) 5-0 and secured a series victory on Saturday night.

Candiotti was dominant from the word go, sitting the Cardinal down in order in the first inning. At one point from the second inning through the sixth the right-hander sat down 14 consecutive Stanford batters. Candiotti improved to 5-2 on the year and lowered his ERA in Pac-12 play to 2.12.

Arizona's offense struck early, tagging the Cardinal starting pitcher for three runs in the first three innings. The Wildcats swatted nine hits, four of which went for extra bases, and drew seven walks. Second baseman Garen Caulfield led the charge with three hits, including a double and a triple.

The Wildcats 16th Pac-12 win of the year guaranteed them a winning record in conference play, a feat achieved just 19 times previously since joining the Pac-12 for the 1979 baseball season.

    • He is the first Arizona pitcher with multiple regular season complete games since Cameron Ming in 2017.
  • Friday's victory was the 100th of head coach Chip Hale's Arizona career.
  • Arizona has now shut out multiple Pac-12 opponents for the first time since 2016.
  • With the win, the Wildcats are the first team to clinch a berth in the Pac-12 Baseball Tournament.
