MASTERS OF THE AIR: Arizona Baseball, in coordination with officials from the 305th Rescue Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, will proudly host a flyover at Hi Corbett Field on Sunday, May 5 as part of the program's Military Appreciation Weekend festivities. The flyover will consist of one HH-60W Combat Rescue Helicopter and one HH-60G Pave Hawk in formation. Crew members for the flight will be Lt Col Brough McDonald, Lt Col Paul Anderson, Capt Scott Lauth, Capt Sean Loose, MSgt Trevor Stevens, MSgt Michael Bentley, TSgt Alan Haas, TSgt Tanner Wade, TSgt Tyler Thomas, and SSgt Chris Corrales. Ground control coordination will be led by USAF Lt Col Mark "Tron" Fraser.
STREAKONOMICS: Outfielder
Emilio Corona and catcher
Blake McDonald both carry five-game hit streaks into this weekend's action at Hi Corbett Field; they are the two longest active streaks on the team. Outfielder
Brendan Summerhill has posted the longest hit streak of the season thus far, a 12-game streak that was snapped on April 7 at California. Summerhill also holds the longest on-base streak on the team this year, a 33-game streak that ended last weekend at Washington. Over that 33-game stretch, Summerhill posted a .428 on-base percentage; he drew 20 walks and collected 47 hits during the streak.
Garen Caulfield (18 games),
Mason White (14 games), and
Blake McDonald (8 games) all carry extended on-base streaks of their own into this weekend's action in Tucson.
ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS: From March 24–April 26, the Wildcats won 11 consecutive Pac-12 Conference games, the program's longest single-season conference win streak since they joined the Pac-10 for the 1979 baseball season. Across those 45-plus seasons in the Pac-10/12, Arizona's previous longest single-season conference game win streak was eight games, accomplished five times. The Wildcats 11-game streak fell four games shy of what is believed to be the longest single-season Pac-12 win streak, a 15-game streak compiled by Stanford from March 3–April 27, 1990.
PITCH PERFECT: Arizona's pitching staff has excelled this season at limiting walks and striking opponents out. The Wildcats have issued the fewest walks (11) in the nation this season and are the only team in the Pac-12 with fewer than 130 walks issued, while their 387 strikeouts and 9.13 K/9 rank fifth and sixth on the circuit, respectively. On a national stage, Arizona's impressive 2.62 BB/9 rate is the best in Division I, while their 3.49 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranks second.
SHORTSTOP SLUGGERS: Sophomore infielder
Mason White, the Wildcats everyday shortstop this season, currently leads the team and ranks third in the Pac-12 with 14 home runs through the first 43 games of the season. Dating back through the 1998 season (StatCrew era), no Arizona shortstop has hit more home runs in a single season. He is just five home runs shy of breaking into the Wildcats all-time single-season leaderboard. If the season ended today, his 12.43 HR/AB ratio would be the tenth-best mark in program history.
HOME SWEET HOME: Since Arizona Baseball moved to Hi Corbett Field for the 2012 season, the Wildcats have enjoyed a tremendous home field advantage. Over those 12+ seasons, Arizona has posted a home record of 287-119, winning games at a .707 clip. Their home winning percentage over that stretch is the second best mark in the conference, while their 287 home victories are tops in the conference.
START US UP: Arizona's weekend starting rotation of
Jackson Kent,
Clark Candiotti, and
Cam Walty has been arguably the strongest in the Pac-12 Conference this season. The trio has combined to make 31 starts this season, 15 of which have registered as quality starts (6.0+ IP, three or fewer ER allowed) and 28 of which have lasted five or more innings. Between them they have posted a 2.83 ERA (56ERx178.1IP) in their 31 starts; the number improves to a meager 2.74 ERA (37ERx121.1IP) across their 21 Pac-12 starts. All three starters rank among the Top 10 qualified pitchers in the Pac-12 in ERA:
Jackson Kent 2nd, 2.41;
Cam Walty 4th, 2.64;
Clark Candiotti 7th, 3.36.
MILESTONE MEN: With a win over UCLA on March 29, Arizona Baseball picked up the 3,000th victory in program history. The Wildcats joined the ranks of just nine other programs that boast 3,000 program wins. As it currently stands, Arizona is the 10th all-time winningest program in the history of college baseball. Four of the winningest programs in college baseball history are current members of the Pac-12 Conference.
NOTHING BUT NETZ: Fifth-year senior
Dawson Netz has established himself as one of the most experienced pitchers in Arizona Baseball history. Going into this weekend, Netz has logged 89 appearances in his collegiate career — 14 starts and 75 relief — the third most games pitched in Wildcat history. His 89 pitching appearances are tied for the 17th most among all active Division I pitchers. Netz recently moved past Ben White (1993-96) on the all-time leaderboard, the father of Dawson's current teammate,
Mason White. He is currently on pace to finish the regular season with 92 career pitching appearances in an Arizona uniform, which would rank third all-time.
ROAD FROM THE SHOW: Arizona Baseball, a program that proudly boasts 280 Major League Baseball Draft selections and 94 alumni MLB players, also currently has five players on the roster with MLB ties in their bloodlines. Between those five players, the Wildcats relatives have logged 44 years and 1,357 games worth of Major League service time.
