TUCSON, Ariz. - Today, the University of Arizona and head men's basketball coach
Tommy Lloyd agreed on a one-year contract extension that will keep Lloyd under contract through 2030. The extension is pending Arizona Board of Regents Approval at their scheduled meeting next week.
"In this time of transformational change in college athletics, we are pleased to add a contract year providing Coach Lloyd, his family and the university with additional certainty," Arizona Vice President and Director of Athletics Desireé Reed-Francois said. "Coach Lloyd has demonstrated the ability to lead our program on the court, to ensure our student-athletes' academic success and to recruit young men of good character. Our storied men's basketball program is in good hands under Coach Lloyd's direction."
This extension will be added to the final four years of his February 2024
five-year agreement.
In his four seasons as the head coach at Arizona, Lloyd has amassed a record of 112-33 (.772), which is the second-most wins in NCAA history for a head coach in his first four seasons. He has guided the Wildcats to four NCAA Tournament appearances and has led one of seven teams in the country to advance to the Sweet Sixteen in at least three of the last four tournaments. Arizona's average seed in those NCAA Tournament appearances has been 2.25, which is tied with Purdue for second-best in the country, trailing only Houston (2.00).
"Our program is grateful for the continued support from Desiree Reed-Francois, President Garimella and John Arnold, as well as the generosity of our donors, as we work tirelessly to keep Arizona at the forefront of college basketball in this time of unprecedented change," Lloyd said. "The University of Arizona, the Tucson community and the entire state of Arizona are special, not just to me and to my family, but to so many people around the world. We are committed to Tucson and leading this program as we build upon the legacy of those that came before me. We will continue to work as hard as we can to make everyone proud to be a Wildcat."
Lloyd and the Wildcats have maintained the homecourt advantage in McKale Center, posting a 60-6 record at home, the seventh-most home wins in the country over the last four years. And the .909 home winning percentage ranks in the top 10 in the country.
This year, Arizona played the fourth-most difficult schedule according to KenPom.com, including 21 Quad 1 games, which were tied for the most in the country. In his career against Top 25 opponents, Lloyd is 21-13 for a winning percentage of .618, which is the fourth-best percentage in the nation, while the 21 wins rank seventh in the country.
The program has also been prolific in the classroom under Lloyd, setting a program record with a 3.193 team GPA in the Fall 2024 semester. Lloyd also recruited and coached
Pelle Larsson, who was named a CSC Academic All-American in 2024 to become just the fifth Arizona men's basketball player to receive that honor and the first since 1991.
Lloyd's reach also extends internationally, as he was the head coach of the USA Basketball U18 National Team that won a gold medal at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup in Argentina. This summer, he will serve as the head coach of USA Basketball's U19 National Team that will compete in the FIBA U19 World Cup in Switzerland.
