ATLANTA, Ga. — Arizona Baseball outfielder
Aaron Walton, a key member of the program's 44-win campaign this year, has been selected by the Cleveland Guardians with the 66th overall pick in the second round of the 2025 MLB Draft.
With his selection, Walton becomes the second member of the Wildcats College World Series outfield to be picked on the first day of the draft. He joins teammate
Brendan Summerhill, who earlier on Sunday even was
selected in the first round by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Walton is the 286th MLB Draft pick in Arizona Baseball history, and he accomplished the feat following just one red-hot season with the Wildcats.
After spending the first two years of his collegiate career at Samford, Walton transferred to Arizona for his junior season. Across 65 games he posted a .320 batting average with 71 runs scored, 22 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 49 RBI, a 1.026 OPS, and 19 stolen bases. His 71 runs, 22 doubles, and 19 stolen bases all led the team, with the first two also pacing the Big 12 Conference.
Walton, a Tennessee native, joins the Guardians system after picking up All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and Eugene NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team selections in his breakout campaign.
In addition to his prowess at the plate and his speed on the basepaths, Walton was a defensive standout as the Wildcats everyday starting center fielder. In addition to numerous highlight reel catches, Walton posted an impressive .986 fielding percentage on 148 total chances.
The MLB Draft concludes with rounds 4–20 on Monday, July 14 beginning at 8:30 a.m. MST. Day two will be available live on MLB.com.
