TUCSON, Ariz.– Arizona Wildcats opened the weekend at the Sun Devil Classic with a 2-3 loss to No. 8 Arizona State before wrapping up the day with a 3-2 win against Southern Mississippi.
Game 1 No. 19 Arizona 2, No. 8 ASU 3
The Wildcats played well against ASU. Arizona tied the duel 2-2, before the Cats fell short in the last match as Holmer and Cisneros lost in a tight third set, giving ASU the win.
Ashlyn Zilliken and
Madeline Walker came out strong taking their match in straight sets as the #2 pair, 21-17, 23-21
. Sophia Winter and
Jamie Streit played well as the #4 pair, just getting beat in the first set 21-23 before dropping the second 16-21, giving ASU a point and tying the duel.
Stephanie Rondon and
Adri Nieves Papaleo played a competitive match as the #3 pair but fell just short in two sets 19-21, 14-21, giving ASU a 2-1 lead in the duel.
Brooke Boyko and
Sadie Moore played an exciting match, the #5 pair took the first set 21-17, before dropping the second set 15-21, sending the match to a third set. Boyko and Moore came out on top taking the third set 15-13, tying the duel 2-2.
Regan Holmer and
Carlie Cisneros battled in a three set contest as the #1 pair, winning the first set 21-15, before dropping the second 10-21, Cisneros and Holmer played a tough third set but fell just short losing 13-15, giving ASU the clinching point of the duel.
Game 2 No. 19 Arizona 3, No. Southern Mississippi 2
Jamie Streit and
Sophia Winter got things started for Arizona in the second match of the day. The #4 pair picked up a straight set win, 21-12 and 21-17.
Ashlyn Zilliken and
Madeline Walker fought hard through a three-set match 19-21, 24-22, 14-16, but came up just short giving Southern Mississippi their first point of duel.
Sadie Moore and
Brooke Boyko fought hard but lost in straight sets, 9-21, 21-23, giving Southern Mississippi the lead on the duel 2-1.
Tylee Shires and Adri Nieves Papaleo won a crucial match for the Cats to the tie the duel 2-2. The #3 pair fought hard through their three-set match, 23-21, 17-21, 15-12.
Regan Holmer and Carli Cisneros clinched the match for Arizona winning in another three-set match, 21-19, 18-21, 15-12.
The Cats will be back in action tomorrow for one game as they face Nebraska.
