No. 59 Arizona Men's Tennis Falls to No. 17 California
Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's tennis team fell to the California Golden Bears, 2-5, on Friday. The Wildcats won one singles match and two in the doubles competition. The Cats are now 8-10 on the season.
On the singles side, playing in the first position, senior Steven Capriati, ranked No. 40 in the nation, topped No. 83 Balazs Veress, 7-6, 6-4. Sophomore Whi Kim, in the second spot, fell to Conor Niland, 6-1, 6-4. Junior Tom Lloyd lost to No. 120 Wayne Wong, 6-1, 6-4, playing in the third position. Sophomore Carl Hagman, competing in the fourth spot, was defeated by Robert Kowalcyzk, 7-6, 6-2. Competing in the fifth slot, sophomore Roeland Brateanu dropped his match to Mik Ledvonova, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Freshman Colin O'Grady, playing in the sixth position, fell to Ben Miles, 7-6, 6-4.
Arizona won two doubles matches, therefore the Wildcats won the doubles point. The team of Capriati and Hagman fell to No. 37 John Paul Fruttero and Kowalcyzk, 8-3. In the second position, Kim and Brateanu topped Veress and Miles, 8-4. O'Grady and Lloyd, competing in the third spot, beat Niland and Exon, 8-1.
The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday, April 13 at 12:00 p.m. when they host the Stanford Cardinal.
