No. 69 Arizona Men's Tennis Wins First Pac-10 Contest

Eugene, Ore. - The University of Arizona men's tennis team topped the Oregon Ducks, 4-3, on Saturday. The Wildcats won three singles matches and swept the doubles competition. The Cats are now 8-9 on the season.

On the singles side, playing in the first position, senior Steven Capriati, ranked No. 40 in the nation, beat Manuel Kost, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Whi Kim, in the second spot, fell to Oded Teig in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Junior Tom Lloyd, topped Jason Menke, 6-1, 6-2, playing in the third position. Sophomore Carl Hagman, competing in the fourth spot, was defeated by Sven Swinnen by a score of 6-2, 6-4. Competing in the fifth spot, senior Bruno Arapovic lost to Greg Dudbourdieu, 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Roeland Brateanu, playing in the sixth position, handled Chris King, 6-4, 6-4.

Arizona won all its doubles matches, therefore the Wildcats won the doubles point. The team of Capriati and Hagman outlasted Teig and Swinnen, 8-6. In the second position, Kim and Brateanu topped Menke and Paalberg, 8-6. Freshman Colin O'Grady and Lloyd, competing in the third spot, defeated King and Kost, 8-6, for their second victory of the weekend.

The Wildcats are back in action on Friday, April 12 at 1:30 p.m. when they host the California Golden Bears.
